Subatomic Particles

 <h4>La découverte de l'électron </h4>
 
 Le premier indice sur la structure subatomique est survenu à la fin du 19e siècle quand J. J. Thomson découvrit l'électron à l'aide d'un tube cathodique. Cet instrument comprenait un tube de verre scellé, dont la quasi-totalité de l'air avait été retirée, et qui contenait deux électrodes métalliques. Lorsqu'une tension élevée était appliquée à travers les électrodes, un faisceau visible appelé rayon cathodique apparaissait entre elles. Ce faisceau était dévié vers la charge positive en s'éloignant de la charge négative, et était produit de la même manière avec des propriétés identiques lorsque différents métaux étaient utilisés pour les électrodes. Dans des expériences similaires, le rayon a été simultanément dévié en appliquant un champ magnétique. Les mesures de l'étendue de la déflexion et de l'intensité du champ magnétique ont permis à Thomson de calculer le rapport charge/masse des particules des rayons cathodiques. Les résultats de ces mesures ont indiqué que ces particules étaient beaucoup plus légères que les atomes. Sur la base de ses observations, Thomson a proposé ce qui suit : 
 
 <ul>
 <li>Les particules sont attirées par des charges positives (+) et repoussées par des charges négatives (−), de sorte qu'elles doivent être chargées négativement (les charges de même signe se repoussent et les charges de signe contraire s'attirent) ; </li>
 <li>Les particules sont moins massives que les atomes et impossibles à distinguer, quel que soit le matériau source, elles doivent donc être des constituants subatomiques fondamentaux de tous les atomes. </li>
 </ul>
 
 La particule du rayon cathodique de Thomson est un électron, une particule subatomique chargée négativement, dont la masse est 1000 × plus petite que celle d'un atome. Le terme “ électron ” a été inventé en 1891 par le physicien irlandais George Stoney, à partir de “ ion électrique”. 
 
 En 1909, Robert A. Millikan a calculé la charge d'un électron grâce à ses expériences de la “ goutte d'huile ”. Millikan a créé des gouttelettes d'huile microscopiques, qui pouvaient être chargées électriquement par friction à mesure qu'elles se formaient ou par rayons X. Ces gouttelettes sont d'abord tombées en raison de la gravité, mais leur progression vers le bas pouvait être ralentie ou même inversée par un champ électrique plus bas dans le dispositif. En ajustant l'intensité du champ électrique et en effectuant des mesures précises et des calculs appropriés, Millikan a pu déterminer que la charge sur les gouttes individuelles était de 1,6 × 10−19 C (coulomb). Millikan a conclu que cette valeur doit donc être la charge fondamentale d'un seul électron. Comme la charge d’un électron était maintenant connue grâce aux recherches de Millikan — et que le rapport charge/masse était déjà connu grâce aux recherches de Thomson (1,759 × 1011 C/kg) — la masse de l’électron a été déterminée à 9,107 × 10−31 kg.

 <h4>Le modèle nucléaire de Rutherford </h4>
 
 Les scientifiques avaient maintenant établi que l'atome n'était pas indivisible comme l'avait cru Dalton, et grâce aux travaux de Thomson, Millikan et d'autres, la charge et la masse des particules subatomiques négatives — les électrons — étaient connues. Les scientifiques savaient que la charge globale d'un atome était neutre. Cependant, la partie chargée positivement d'un atome n'était pas encore bien comprise. En 1904, Thomson a proposé le modèle “ plum pudding ” des atomes, qui décrit une masse chargée positivement avec une quantité égale de charge négative sous forme d'électrons qui y sont incorporés, puisque tous les atomes sont électriquement neutres. Un modèle concurrent a été proposé en 1903 par Hantaro Nagaoka, qui a postulé un atome de type Saturne, composé d'une sphère chargée positivement entourée d'un halo d'électrons.  
 
 La prochaine avancée majeure dans la compréhension de l'atome provient d'Ernest Rutherford. Il a effectué une série d'expériences en utilisant un faisceau de particules alpha à haute vitesse chargées positivement (particules α), produites par la désintégration radioactive du radium. Il a dirigé un faisceau de particules α sur un morceau très mince de feuille d'or et a examiné la diffusion des particules α qui en résultait à l'aide d'un écran luminescent qui luisait brièvement lorsqu'il était frappé par une particule alpha. Il a observé que la plupart des particules passaient directement à travers la feuille sans être du tout déviées. Cependant, certaines d'entre elles ont été légèrement détournées, et un très petit nombre a presque été détourné directement vers la source. 
 
 De ce fait, Rutherford a alors déduit ce qui suit : parce que la plupart des particules α se déplaçant rapidement sont passées entre les atomes d'or sans être déviées, elles doivent avoir traversé essentiellement un espace vide à l'intérieur de l'atome. Les particules alpha sont chargées positivement, de sorte que des déflexions se sont produites lorsqu'elles ont rencontré une autre charge positive (les charges de même signe se repoussent les unes les autres). Puisque les charges de même signe se repoussent les unes les autres, les quelques particules α chargées positivement qui ont changé de trajectoire brusquement doivent avoir frappé ou s'être approchées de près d'un autre corps qui avait également une charge positive très concentrée. Comme les déflexions se sont produites une petite fraction du temps, cette charge n'occupait qu'une petite quantité de l'espace dans la feuille d'or. 
 
 En analysant une série d'expériences, Rutherford a tiré deux conclusions importantes : 
 
 <ol>
 <li>Le volume occupé par un atome doit être constitué d'une grande quantité d'espace vide. </li>
 <li>Un petit corps chargé positivement relativement lourd, le noyau, doit être au centre de chaque atome. </li>
 </ol>
 
 Cette analyse a conduit Rutherford à proposer un modèle dans lequel un atome se compose d'un très petit noyau chargé positivement, dans lequel la plus grande partie de la masse de l'atome est concentrée, entouré par les électrons chargés négativement de sorte que l'atome est électriquement neutre. Après de nombreuses autres expériences, Rutherford a également découvert que les noyaux d'autres éléments contiennent le noyau d'hydrogène comme ” pierre angulaire ”, et il a nommé cette particule plus fondamentale le proton, la particule subatomique chargée positivement que l'on trouve dans le noyau.  
 
 <h4>Structure d'un atome </h4>
 
 Les protons se trouvent dans le noyau d'un atome et ont une charge positive. Le nombre de protons est égal au numéro atomique du tableau périodique et détermine l'identité de l'élément. On trouve également des neutrons dans le noyau. Ils n'ont pas de charge, mais ils ont la même masse que les protons et contribuent ainsi à la masse atomique d'un atome. Les électrons tournent autour du noyau dans des nuages. Ils ont une charge négative et une masse négligeable, donc ils contribuent à la charge globale d'un atome, mais pas à sa masse. 
 
 <h4>Neutrons </h4>
 
 On sait que le noyau contient presque toute la masse d'un atome, le nombre de protons ne fournissant que la moitié, ou moins, de cette masse. Différentes propositions ont été faites pour expliquer ce qui constituait la masse restante, y compris l'existence de particules neutres dans le noyau. Ce n'est qu'en 1932 que James Chadwick a trouvé la preuve de neutrons, particules subatomiques non chargées, avec une masse approximativement la même que celle des protons. 
 
 L'existence du neutron explique également les isotopes : ils diffèrent en masse parce qu'ils ont des nombres différents de neutrons, mais ils sont chimiquement identiques parce qu'ils ont le même nombre de protons. 
 
 <h4>L'unité de masse atomique (uma) et l'unité de charge fondamentale (e) </h4>
 
 Le noyau contient la majorité de la masse d’un atome parce que les protons et les neutrons sont beaucoup plus lourds que les électrons, alors que les électrons occupent presque tout le volume d’un atome. Le diamètre d'un atome est de l'ordre de 10−10 m, alors que le diamètre du noyau est d'environ 10−15 m, soit environ 100 000 fois plus petit. Les atomes &mdash et les protons, les neutrons et les électrons qui les composent &mdash sont extrêmement petits. Par exemple, un atome de carbone pèse moins de 2 × 10−23 g, et un électron a une charge inférieure à 2 × 10−19 C. lorsqu'on décrit les propriétés de petits objets tels que les atomes, on utilise des unités de mesure comme l'unité de masse atomique (uma) et l'unité de charge fondamentale (e). L'uma est défini par rapport à l'isotope le plus abondant du carbone, dont les atomes se sont vus attribuer des masses de exactement 12 uma. Ainsi, une uma est exactement 1/12 de la masse d'un atome de carbone 12 : 1 uma = 1,6605 × 10−24 g. Le Dalton (Da) et l'unité de masse atomique unifiée (u) sont des unités alternatives équivalentes à l'uma. 
 
 L'unité de charge fondamentale (également appelée charge élémentaire) est égale à l'amplitude de la charge d'un électron avec e = 1,602 &times 10&minus19 C. Un proton a une masse de 1,0073 uma et une charge de 1+. Un neutron est une particule légèrement plus lourde avec une masse de 1,0087 uma et une charge de zéro ; comme son nom l'indique, il est neutre. L'électron a une charge de 1− et c'est une particule beaucoup plus légère avec une masse d'environ 0,00055 uma. Pour référence, il faudrait environ 1800 électrons pour égaler la masse d'un proton. Atomic structure is built from three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Atoms make up all matter, and these particles explain an atom’s mass and charge.

The electron was first identified at the end of the 19th century by J.J. Thomson. He used a cathode ray tube, a sealed glass tube with almost all the air removed and two metal electrodes. When high voltage was applied, a visible beam called a cathode ray formed. The beam bent toward positive charge and away from negative charge. It also behaved the same way no matter which metal was used. In related experiments, a magnetic field also deflected the ray. Thomson used these results to calculate a charge-to-mass ratio and showed that the particles were much lighter than atoms. He concluded that the particles were negatively charged, smaller than atoms, and present in all atoms. That particle is now called the electron.

Robert A. Millikan later measured the charge of the electron with his oil drop experiments in 1909. He made tiny oil droplets that could gain charge from friction or X-rays. Gravity pulled the droplets downward, but an electric field could slow them or reverse their motion. From careful measurements, Millikan found a charge of 1.6 × 10−19 C for a single drop. He concluded that this was the charge of one electron. With Thomson’s charge-to-mass ratio and Millikan’s charge value, the mass of the electron was calculated to be 9.107 × 10−31 kg.

These discoveries showed that Dalton’s atom was not indivisible. Scientists also explored how positive charge is arranged in the atom. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model in 1904, where electrons were embedded in a positively charged mass. In 1903, Hantaro Nagaoka suggested a Saturn-like atom with electrons around a positive sphere. Ernest Rutherford later tested the atom with alpha particle scattering. He aimed fast, positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and observed them with a glowing screen. Most particles passed through without deflection. Some were turned slightly, and a very small number bounced almost straight back. Rutherford concluded that atoms contain a lot of empty space and that a small, heavy, positively charged nucleus sits at the center.

Rutherford’s model placed most of an atom’s mass in the nucleus and the electrons around it so the atom stayed neutral. He also found that nuclei of other elements contain the hydrogen nucleus as a building block and named that particle the proton. Protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus. The number of protons equals the atomic number on the periodic table and identifies the element. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They have no charge but have about the same mass as protons, so they add to atomic mass. Electrons move in clouds around the nucleus. They have a negative charge and very little mass, so they affect charge more than mass.

James Chadwick provided evidence for neutrons in 1932. Neutrons are uncharged subatomic particles with a mass similar to protons. Their discovery helped explain isotopes. Isotopes have different masses because they have different numbers of neutrons, but they are chemically identical because they have the same number of protons.

Atoms are extremely small, so chemists use smaller units such as the atomic mass unit, or amu, and the fundamental unit of charge, e. The nucleus is about 100,000 times smaller in diameter than the atom, but it contains most of the mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons. One amu is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, and 1 amu equals 1.6605 × 10−24 g. The fundamental charge equals the charge of an electron, 1.602 × 10−19 C. A proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. A neutron has a mass of 1.0087 amu and a charge of 0. An electron has a mass of about 0.00055 amu and a charge of 1−. About 1800 electrons have the mass of one proton.
