Ionic Bonding and Electron Transfer

 <h4>Propriétés des composés ioniques </h4>
 
 Les propriétés des composés ioniques mettent en évidence la nature des liaisons ioniques. 
 
 <ul>
 <li>Les solides ioniques présentent une structure cristalline et ont tendance à être rigides et fragiles ; ils ont également tendance à avoir des points de fusion et d'ébullition élevés, ce qui suggère que les liaisons ioniques sont très fortes.  </li>
 <li>Les solides ioniques sont également de mauvais conducteurs d'électricité pour la même raison : la force des liaisons ioniques empêche les ions de se déplacer librement à l'état solide.  </li>
 <li>Toutefois, la plupart des solides ioniques se dissolvent facilement dans l'eau. Une fois dissous ou fondus, les composés ioniques sont d'excellents conducteurs d'électricité et de chaleur car les ions peuvent se déplacer librement. </li>
 </ul>
 
 <h4>La formation de composés ioniques </h4>
 
 De nombreux éléments métalliques ont des potentiels d'ionisation relativement faibles et perdent facilement des électrons. Ces éléments se trouvent sur la gauche dans une période ou près du bas d'un groupe sur le tableau périodique. Les atomes de non-métaux ont des affinités électroniques relativement élevées et ils gagnent ainsi facilement des électrons perdus par les atomes de métaux, remplissant ainsi leurs couches de valence. Les éléments non métalliques se trouvent dans le coin supérieur droit du tableau périodique. 
 
 Comme toutes les substances doivent être électriquement neutres, le nombre total de charges positives sur les cations d'un composé ionique doit être égal au nombre total de charges négatives sur ses anions. La formule d'un composé ionique représente le rapport le plus simple de nombres d'ions qui est nécessaire pour donner un nombre de charges positives et négatives identique.  
 
 <h4>Les composés ioniques forment des structures tridimensionnelles assemblées de façon régulière </h4>
 
 Il est toutefois important de noter que la formule d'un composé ionique ne représente pas la disposition physique de ses ions. Il est inexact de se référer à la “ molécule ” de chlorure de sodium (NaCl) car il n'y a pas, en soi, de liaison ionique unique entre n'importe laquelle des paires d'ions sodium et chlorure. Les forces d'attraction entre les ions sont isotropes — les mêmes dans toutes les directions —, ce qui signifie que tout ion particulier est attiré de façon égale par tous les ions de charge opposée à proximité. Les ions s'agencent de façon à être étroitement liés dans une structure en réseau tridimensionnelle. Le chlorure de sodium, par exemple, consiste en un arrangement régulier de nombres égaux de cations Na+ et d'anions Cl−. La forte attraction électrostatique entre les ions Na+ et Cl− les maintient fermement ensemble dans NaCl solide. Il faut 769 kJ d'énergie pour dissocier une mole de NaCl solide en ions Na+ et Cl− gazeux séparés.  
 
 <h4>Structures électroniques des cations </h4>
 
 Lors de la formation d'un cation, l'atome d'un l'élément du groupe principal a tendance à perdre tous ses électrons de valence, en prenant ainsi la structure électronique du gaz noble qui le précède dans le tableau périodique.  
 
 <ul>
 <li>Pour les groupes 1 (les métaux alcalins) et 2 (les métaux alcalino-terreux), les numéros du groupe sont égaux aux nombres d'électrons de la couche de valence et, par conséquent, aux charges des cations formés à partir des atomes de ces éléments lorsque tous les électrons de la couche de valence sont enlevés.  </li>
 <li>Par exemple, le calcium est un élément du groupe 2 dont les atomes neutres ont 20 électrons et une configuration électronique à l'état fondamental de 1s22s22p63s23p64s2. Lorsqu'un atome de Ca perd ses deux électrons de valence, il en résulte un cation avec 18 électrons, une charge de 2+ et une configuration électronique de 1s22s22p63s23p6. L'ion Ca2+ et le gaz noble Ar sont donc isoélectroniques. </li>
 <li>Pour les groupes 13–17, les numéros du groupe dépasse le nombre d'électrons de valence de 10 (ce qui explique la possibilité de sous-couches d pleines dans les atomes d'éléments de la quatrième période et des périodes ultérieures). Ainsi, la charge d'un cation formé par la perte de tous les électrons de valence est égale au numéro de groupe moins 10. Par exemple, l'aluminium (dans le groupe 13) forme des ions 3+ (Al3+). </li>
 </ul>
 
 <h4>Exceptions </h4>
 
 <ul>
 <li>Parmi les exceptions au comportement prévu, figurent des éléments situés vers le bas des groupes.  </li>
 <li>En plus des ions prévus Tl3+, Sn4+, Pb4+ et Bi5+, une perte partielle des électrons de la couche de valence de ces atomes peut également conduire à la formation des ions Tl+, Sn2+, Pb2+ et Bi3+. La formation de ces cations 1+, 2+ et 3+ est attribuée à l'effet du doublet inerte, qui reflète l'énergie relativement faible du doublet d'électrons s pour les atomes des éléments lourds des groupes 13, 14 et 15.  </li>
 <li>Le mercure (groupe 12) présente également un comportement inattendu : il forme un ion diatomique, Hg22+ (un ion formé à partir de deux atomes de mercure, avec une liaison Hg-Hg), en plus de l'ion monatomique prévu Hg2+ (formé à partir d'un seul atome de mercure). </li>
 <li>Les éléments des métaux de transition et de transition interne se comportent différemment des éléments du groupe principal. La plupart des cations des métaux de transition ont des charges de 2+ ou 3+ qui résultent de la perte de leur(s) électron(s) s le(s) plus externe(s) en premier, parfois suivie de la perte d'un ou de deux électrons d de la couche la plus externe suivante. </li>
 <li>Bien que les orbitales d des éléments de transition soient — selon le principe Aufbau — les dernières à être remplies lorsqu'on construit des configurations électroniques, les électrons les plus externes sont les premiers à être perdus lorsque ces atomes sont ionisés. Lorsque les métaux de transition interne forment des ions, ils ont généralement une charge de 3+, résultant de la perte de leurs électrons les plus externes et d'un électron d ou f. </li>
 </ul>
 
 <h4>Structures électroniques des anions </h4>
 
 La plupart des anions monatomiques se forment lorsque l'atome d'un non métal neutre gagne suffisamment d'électrons pour remplir complètement ses orbitales externes s et p, atteignant ainsi la configuration électronique du prochain gaz noble. Ainsi, il est simple de déterminer la charge sur un ion aussi négatif : la charge est égale au nombre d'électrons qui doivent être acquis pour remplir les orbitales s et p de l'atome parent. L'oxygène, par exemple, a la configuration électronique 1s22s22p4, alors que l'anion oxygène a le configuration électronique du gaz noble néon (Ne), 1s22s22p6. Les deux électrons supplémentaires nécessaires pour remplir les orbitales de valence donnent à l'ion oxyde la charge de 2– (O2–).

Ionic compounds form when positive and negative ions attract each other. A cation is a positive ion, and it forms when an atom loses one or more valence electrons. An anion is a negative ion, and it forms when an atom gains one or more valence electrons. Compounds made of these ions are called ionic compounds, or salts, and the force between them is an ionic bond.

The properties of ionic solids help show how strong this attraction is. They usually form rigid, brittle crystals and have high melting and boiling points. They are also poor conductors of electricity in the solid state because the ions cannot move freely. Most ionic solids dissolve readily in water. When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved, it conducts electricity and heat well because the ions can move about freely.

Ionic compounds form most easily when metals lose electrons and nonmetals gain them. Many metals have low ionization potentials, so they lose electrons easily. These elements are found on the left side of the periodic table or near the bottom of a group. Nonmetals have high electron affinities, so they readily gain the electrons lost by metals. They are found in the upper-right corner of the periodic table.

Ionic compounds must remain electrically neutral. That means the total positive charge from the cations must equal the total negative charge from the anions. The formula of an ionic compound gives the simplest ratio of ions needed to balance charge. The formula does not show the physical layout of the ions. In solid sodium chloride, for example, the ions form a tightly bound three-dimensional lattice. The attraction between Na+ and Cl- ions is strong, and it takes 769 kJ of energy to separate one mole of solid NaCl into gaseous ions.

Main-group cations often form by losing all valence electrons and taking on the electron structure of the noble gas before them. For groups 1 and 2, the group number matches the number of valence electrons and also the charge of the ion formed. Calcium is a group 2 element. A neutral calcium atom has 20 electrons, and Ca2+ has 18 electrons with the same electron configuration as argon. For groups 13 through 17, the cation charge equals the group number minus 10. Aluminum, in group 13, forms Al3+.

Some heavy main-group elements do not follow the expected pattern exactly. Thallium, tin, lead, and bismuth can also form lower-charge ions such as Tl+, Sn2+, Pb2+, and Bi3+. This is explained by the inert pair effect, which reflects the relatively low energy of the valence s-electron pair in these heavy atoms. Mercury is another exception. It can form the diatomic ion Hg2^2+, which contains a Hg-Hg bond, as well as the monatomic ion Hg2+.

Transition metals and inner transition metals form ions in a different way. Most transition metal cations have 2+ or 3+ charges. These usually come from losing the outermost s electron or electrons first, and sometimes one or two d electrons after that. Even though d orbitals fill later according to the Aufbau principle, the outermost s electrons are lost first when transition metals ionize. Inner transition metals usually form 3+ ions by losing their outermost s electrons and one d or f electron.

Most monatomic anions form when a nonmetal atom gains enough electrons to fill its outer s and p orbitals. The charge on the ion equals the number of electrons needed to reach the next noble-gas electron configuration. Oxygen is a clear example. A neutral oxygen atom has the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p4. The oxide ion, O2-, has the neon configuration, 1s2 2s2 2p6, after gaining two electrons.
