- Les cellules eucaryotescontiennent de nombreux compartiments internes,des organites séparées par des membranes,permettant l'existence de fonctions très précisesau sein de micro-environnements,protégées tant du cytoplasme à l'intérieurque de l'environnement extérieur à la cellule. 
Par exemple, le noyau nécessite des conditions contrôléespour réguler précisément les gènes à l'intérieur. 
Il est donc entouré d'une double membrane,l'enveloppe du noyau,dont les pores contrôlent les molécules pouvant entrer,ou sortir, comme l'ARNm. 
De plus, certaines protéinesnécessitent un environnement oxydantet doivent être isolées du cytosol,qui a une action de réduction. 
Ainsi, les ribosomes produisent ces protéinesdans le réticulum endoplasmique,où elles peuvent subir des modifications capitales. 
Les mouvements qui suiventont même lieu dans de petits microcosmes chimiques,les vésicules, en route vers leurs destinations finales. 
D'autres organites, comme les peroxysomes,fournissent une protection contre leurs propres déchets,comme le peroxyde d'hydrogène,en séquestrant des enzymesqui convertissent les éléments toxiquesen molécules inoffensives, comme de l'eau. 
De même, les lysosomes isolent les enzymes,mais pour une autre raison :protéger les réactions de digestion,qui nécessitent un pH beaucoup plus faibleque celui du cytoplasme. 
Les mitochondries ont aussi un intérieur acide,entre leurs deux membranes,ce qui les aide à produire de l'énergie. 
Dans l'ensemble, la compartimentation eucaryotiquesoutient des actions qui seraient autrement incompatibleslorsqu'elles se produisent simultanémentsans aucune forme de séparation.

L’un des traits caractéristiques des cellules eucaryotes est qu’elles contiennent des organites délimités par une membrane, comme le noyau et les mitochondries, qui exercent des fonctions particulières. Comme les membranes biologiques ne sont perméables qu’à un petit nombre de substances, la membrane autour d’un organite crée un compartiment avec des conditions contrôlées à l’intérieur. Ces micro-environnements sont souvent distincts de l’environnement du cytosol qui les entoure et ils sont adaptés aux fonctions spécifiques de l’organite.
 
 Par exemple, les lysosomes — organites dans les cellules animales qui digèrent les molécules et les débris cellulaires — maintiennent un environnement plus acide que le cytosol environnant, parce que leurs enzymes ont besoin d’un pH inférieur pour catalyser les réactions. De même, le pH est régulé dans les mitochondries, ce qui les aide à remplir leur fonction de production d’énergie.
 
 En outre, certaines protéines ont besoin d’un environnement oxydatif pour se replier et opérer de façon appropriée, mais le cytosol est généralement réducteur. Par conséquent, ces protéines sont produites par des ribosomes dans le réticulum endoplasmique (RE), qui maintient l’environnement nécessaire. Les protéines sont souvent transportées à l’intérieur de la cellule par des vésicules délimitées par une membrane.
 
 Le matériel génétique des cellules eucaryotes est compartimenté dans le noyau, qui est entouré d’une double membrane appelée l’enveloppe nucléaire. De petits pores dans l’enveloppe contrôlent les molécules ou les ions qui peuvent entrer ou quitter le noyau. Par exemple, l’ARN messager (ARNm) sort du noyau par ces pores pour apporter les instructions génétiques codées dans l’ADN aux ribosomes, où elles peuvent être traduites en protéines. 
 
 Les organites peuvent également protéger une cellule en contenant et en neutralisant des substances dangereuses. Par exemple, les peroxysomes effectuent des réactions d’oxydation qui produisent du peroxyde d’hydrogène, qui est toxique pour les cellules, mais ils contiennent également des enzymes qui le transforment en oxygène et en eau inoffensifs. Par conséquent, la compartimentation permet aux cellules eucaryotes d’effectuer une grande variété de fonctions différentes qui seraient autrement incompatibles en termes de leurs environnements requis ou des sous-produits engendrés.
