Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms

Le transfert de gènes se produit quand l'information génétique est transférée d'un organisme à un autre. Il existe deux types de transfert génétique, vertical et horizontal. Le transfert vertical de gènes, le plus commun des deux, est la transmission de l'information génétique d'une génération à la suivante.Le transfert vertical de gènes a lieu chez les organismes à reproduction sexuelle où ils transmettent environ la moitié de l'ADN a leur progéniture et dans la reproduction asexuée des organismes, qui produisent une progéniture génétiquement identique. A l'inverse, le transfert horizontal de gènes, se produit lorsque le matériel génétique d'un organisme est introduit dans autre organisme de la même génération. Dans le cas de certaines espèces procaryotes, telles que les bactéries, le transfert horizontal de gènes peut se produire entre différentes espèces.Le transfert horizontal de gènes dans les procaryotes se produit via trois mécanismes, transformation, transduction, et conjugaison. Lors de la transformation, une cellule procaryote prend de l'ADN nu issu de l'environnement. Au cours de la transduction, les virus ou bactériophages, dans cet exemple, dégradent l'ADN de leur hôte.De petites longueurs d'ADN de l'hôte peuvent être insérées dans la descendance des bactériophages avant la lyse de la cellule hôte. La progéniture virale va ensuite infecter plus de cellules bactériennes, et va ainsi devenir par inadvertance un médiateur à la transduction. Le transfert génétique se produit lorsque l'information génétique est transmise d'un organisme à un autre. Cela se produit via deux mécanismes : le transfert vertical de gènes et le transfert horizontal de gènes. Le transfert vertical de gènes se produit lorsque l’information génétique est transférée d’une génération à la suivante, ce qui se produit beaucoup plus fréquemment que le transfert horizontal de gènes. La reproduction sexuée et asexuée sont des formes de transfert vertical de gènes, dans lesquelles un ou plusieurs organismes transmettent une partie ou la totalité de leur génome à leur progéniture. De plus, le transfert vertical de gènes se produit chez les espèces procaryotes et eucaryotes.

Le transfert horizontal de gènes se produit lorsque l'information génétique est transmise à un membre de la même génération et se produit le plus souvent chez les espèces procaryotes. Bien que le transfert horizontal de gènes entre espèces soit extrêmement rare chez les eucaryotes, il se produit fréquemment chez les procaryotes. Le transfert horizontal de gènes entre différentes espèces est une source importante de diversité génétique parmi les procaryotes.

La plupart des espèces procaryotes se reproduisent de manière asexuée. Bien que cela permette une production plus rapide de progéniture, la progéniture produite possède une diversité génétique limitée. Le transfert horizontal de gènes joue donc un rôle essentiel dans l’introduction de la diversité génétique chez les procaryotes. Grâce au transfert horizontal de gènes, les procaryotes peuvent partager une petite fraction de leur génome avec d’autres organismes, soit conspécifiques (la même espèce), soit allospécifiques (une espèce différente), au sein de la même génération. De nombreux scientifiques estiment que le transfert horizontal de gènes et la mutation sont les sources les plus importantes de variation génétique chez les procaryotes. Ainsi, le transfert horizontal de gènes fournit une partie de la matière première sur laquelle agit la sélection naturelle.

Un exemple frappant en est l’émergence de souches bactériennes résistantes aux antibiotiques. Les gènes qui confèrent une résistance à un antibiotique peuvent être transférés entre différentes espèces et souches de bactéries, donnant ainsi à la bactérie réceptrice un avantage sélectif, comme les souches de Neisseria gonorrhoeae responsables de la gonorrhée, résistantes à la pénicilline. À une échelle encore plus grande, certaines estimations suggèrent qu’au moins 18 % du génome d’Escherichia coli a été acquis par transfert horizontal de gènes au cours de millions d’années d’évolution.

Genetic transfer is the movement of genetic information from one organism to another. It happens in two main ways: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer moves genes from one generation to the next. It is much more common than horizontal gene transfer.

Vertical gene transfer happens during both sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. In both cases, one or more organisms pass some or all of their genome to their offspring. This kind of transfer occurs in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. It explains how traits are passed down through generations.

Horizontal gene transfer moves genetic information to a member of the same generation. It happens most often in prokaryotic species. In eukaryotes, transfer between different species is very rare, but in prokaryotes it occurs frequently. This makes horizontal gene transfer an important source of genetic diversity among prokaryotes.

Most prokaryotic species reproduce asexually. This helps them make offspring quickly, but the offspring have limited genetic diversity. Horizontal gene transfer helps add new genetic variation. Scientists think that horizontal gene transfer and mutation are two of the biggest sources of genetic variation in prokaryotes, and this variation provides raw material for natural selection.

A clear example is antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Genes that give resistance to an antibiotic can move between different species and strains of bacteria. This can give the receiving bacteria a selective advantage. Penicillin-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes gonorrhea, are one example. Over millions of years, some estimates suggest that at least 18% of the E. coli genome was acquired through horizontal gene transfer.
