What are Membranes?

Une cellule est entourée d’une couche membranaire qui est principalement composée de phospholipides, de protéines et de glucides.
Les phospholipides sont des molécules polaires qui s’arrangent spontanément, souvent sous la forme d’une bicouche continue d’environ sept nanomètres d’épaisseur.
Les têtes polaires hydrophiles, ou aimant l’eau, font face à l’extérieur et à l’intérieur de la cellule. Les queues hydrophobes, ou craignant l’eau, non polaires s’alignent au milieu pour éviter l’exposition à l’eau.
Alors que les phospholipides fournissent la structure de base, les autres composants, les protéines et les glucides, s'associent aux phospholipides et contribuent à la fonction de la membrane.
En fonction des besoins de la cellule, certaines protéines fonctionnent comme des récepteurs qui détectent les signaux extracellulaires et les transmettent à l'intérieur de la cellule.
D’autres agissent comme des transporteurs pour fournir un chemin à travers la membrane pour différents types de molécules. Les protéines supplémentaires sont des liens structurels qui relient le cytosquelette à la matrice extracellulaire ou aux cellules adjacentes.
Les glucides peuvent se lier soit aux phospholipides formant des glycolipides, soit aux protéines sur les membranes, créant ainsi des glycoprotéines. Les deux peuvent lier des hormones ou des neurotransmetteurs, ainsi que permettre aux cellules de se reconnaître.

qu’est ce que les membranes plasmiques ?

La membrane plasmique d'une cellule délimite les frontières de la cellule ainsi que ses interactions avec l'environnement. Les cellules excluent certaines substances, en absorbent et en excrètent d’autres en quantités contrôlées. La membrane plasmique doit être flexible pour permettre à certaines cellules, comme les globules rouges et blancs, de changer de forme en passant dans des capillaires étroits. Ce sont les fonctions les plus évidentes de la membrane plasmique. Par ailleurs, la surface de la membrane plasmique porte des marqueurs qui permettent aux cellules de se reconnaître les unes les autres, ce qui est vital pour la formation des tissus et des organes pendant les premières étapes de l'embryogenèse, et jouera plus tard un rôle dans la distinction entre le « soi » et le « non-soi » de la réponse immunitaire.

La membrane plasmique porte également des protéines sur elle : les récepteurs. Ce sont des sites de fixation de substances spécifiques qui interagissent avec la cellule en transmettant des signaux. Ces protéines agissent à la fois comme récepteurs d’entrées extracellulaires et activateurs de processus intracellulaires. Par exemple, les récepteurs de surface de la membrane créent des modifications à l’intérieur de la cellule, telles que celles que subissent les enzymes des différentes voies métaboliques. Ces voies métaboliques sont vitales pour le ressourcement de la cellule en énergie, ainsi que pour produire des substances spécifiques par celle-ci ou pour la décomposition des déchets cellulaires et des toxines pour leur élimination. Ces récepteurs membranaires fournissent également des sites de fixation extracellulaires pour des effecteurs tels que les hormones et les facteurs de croissance, activant ainsi des cascades de réponses intracellulaires lorsque leurs effecteurs sont liés. Parfois, certains sites de reconnaissance sont utilisés par des virus comme points d'attache. Bien qu'ils soient très spécifiques, les agents pathogènes tels que les virus peuvent évoluer par mutations pour exploiter les récepteurs afin de pénétrer dans une cellule en imitant la substance spécifique à laquelle le récepteur est censé se lier. Cette spécificité contribue à expliquer pourquoi le virus de l’immunodéficience humaine (VIH) ou le virus de l’hépatite n’envahit que certaines cellules bien spécifiques.

The plasma membrane sets the outer boundary of a cell and helps control how the cell interacts with its environment. It lets some substances enter, keeps others out, and releases some materials in controlled amounts. The membrane also needs to stay flexible so cells such as red and white blood cells can change shape as they move through narrow capillaries.

The membrane surface also carries markers that help cells recognize one another. This recognition is important during early development, when tissues and organs form. It also helps the immune system tell the difference between &quot;self&quot; and &quot;non-self.&quot;

Embedded in the membrane are integral proteins called receptors. These are attachment sites for specific substances that communicate with the cell. When a receptor binds its target, it can trigger changes inside the cell, including changes in enzymes that drive metabolic pathways.

These pathways may help supply energy, make needed cell products, or break down wastes and toxins for disposal. Membrane receptors can also bind effectors such as hormones and growth factors and start response cascades inside the cell. In some cases, recognition sites on the membrane can also be used by viruses as entry points.

Because these receptors are highly specific, some viruses can evolve through mutations to exploit them. They may mimic the substance the receptor normally binds and gain access to the cell. This specificity helps explain why HIV and hepatitis viruses infect only certain cells.
