Membrane Fluidity

Membrane fluidity is the ability of phospholipids and proteins to move freely inside the membrane. It is affected by the phospholipid types in the membrane, the temperature of the surroundings,&#160; and the concentration of cholesterol.
Saturated phospholipids have straight fatty acid chains with no double bonds, whereas unsaturated phospholipids have a bend in their fatty acid chains with at least one double bond.&#160;&#160;
Saturated phospholipids form a densely packed membrane, causing lower membrane fluidity. Unsaturated phospholipids disrupt the phospholipid packing, leading to higher membrane fluidity.
At low temperatures, the membrane lipids are tightly packed with little movement, resulting in a rigid membrane. The lipids show increased movement at high temperatures, making the membrane more fluid.
Cholesterol, another membrane component, is inserted between phospholipids, creating a space that increases fluidity during colder temperatures.
In warmer temperatures, the steroid rings in cholesterol immobilize the phospholipids, preventing the membrane from becoming too fluid.
Organisms maintain optimal membrane fluidity under different conditions by regulating the ratio of saturated to unsaturated phospholipids and cholesterol concentration.

Membrane fluidity is explained by the fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane, which describes the plasma membrane structure as a mosaic of components&#8212;including phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates&#8212;that gives the membrane a fluid character.
Mosaic nature of the membrane
The mosaic characteristic of the membrane helps the plasma membrane remain fluid. The integral proteins and lipids exist as separate but loosely-attached molecules in the membrane. The membrane is a relatively rigid structure that can burst if penetrated or if a cell takes in too much water. However, because of its mosaic nature, a very fine needle can easily penetrate the membrane without causing it to burst; the membrane will flow and self-seal when the needle is extracted.
Nature of phospholipids
Next is the nature of the phospholipids that the lipid bilayer is made up of; in saturated form, the fatty acids in phospholipid tails are saturated with bound hydrogen atoms, resulting in straight tails. In contrast, unsaturated fatty acids contain some double bonds between adjacent carbon atoms, causing a bend of approximately 30 degrees in the carbon string. If unsaturated fatty acids are compressed, the &#34;kinks&#34; in their tails push the adjacent phospholipid molecules away, maintaining some space between the phospholipid molecules. This &#34;elbow room&#34; helps maintain fluidity in the membrane at temperatures at which membranes with saturated fatty acid tails in their phospholipids would &#34;freeze&#34; or solidify. The relative fluidity of the membrane is crucial in a cold environment. A cold environment tends to compress membranes composed largely of saturated fatty acids, making them less fluid and more susceptible to rupturing.
Cholesterol
In animals, cholesterol is another factor that helps maintain membrane fluidity. It lies alongside the phospholipids in the membrane and tends to reduce the effects of temperature on the membrane. Thus, cholesterol functions as a buffer, preventing lower temperatures from inhibiting fluidity and preventing higher temperatures from increasing the fluidity too much. Cholesterol extends in both directions the range of temperature in which the membrane is appropriately fluid and functionally active. Cholesterol also serves other functions, such as organizing clusters of transmembrane proteins into lipid rafts. Membrane fluidity allows proteins and lipids to move and accumulate at sites to form lipid rafts and intercellular junctions, maintaining membrane permeability.

Cell membranes stay flexible because of the fluid mosaic model. The plasma membrane is a mosaic of phospholipids, cholesterol, proteins, and carbohydrates. These parts are separate but loosely attached, so the membrane keeps a fluid character. The membrane is still fairly rigid, but it can flow and self-seal after a very fine needle passes through it.

Phospholipid tails also affect membrane fluidity. Saturated fatty acids in phospholipids have straight tails because they are packed with hydrogen atoms. Unsaturated fatty acids have double bonds that create a bend, or kink, of about 30 degrees in the carbon chain. When these bent tails are compressed, they push nearby molecules apart and leave enough space to help the membrane stay fluid.

This extra space matters in cold conditions. Membranes with mostly saturated fatty acid tails can become less fluid, and they may freeze, solidify, or rupture more easily in the cold. Unsaturated tails help prevent that by keeping the membrane from packing too tightly. In this way, membrane fluidity supports cell survival in cooler environments.

In animal cells, cholesterol also helps control membrane fluidity. It sits beside the phospholipids and reduces the effect of temperature changes. Cholesterol acts like a buffer, so low temperatures do not slow fluidity too much and high temperatures do not make the membrane too fluid. It widens the temperature range in which the membrane stays active and also helps organize clusters of transmembrane proteins into lipid rafts. Membrane fluidity also allows proteins and lipids to move and gather at places where lipid rafts and intercellular junctions form, which helps maintain membrane permeability.
