What is Organic Chemistry?

La chimie organique est l’étude de composés chimiques composés principalement d’atomes de carbone liés à des atomes d’hydrogène, d’oxygène, d’azote ou de soufre.
Les composés organiques forment une grande variété de molécules, des éléments constitutifs fondamentaux de la vie comme l’ADN ou les parois cellulaires végétales aux matériaux libérateurs d’énergie comme les carburants. Ils sont généralement facilement décomposés.
Les atomes de carbone constituent l’épine dorsale de tout composé organique, qui peut prendre diverses structures avec des arrangements en forme d’anneau, ramifiés et en chaîne droite en raison de la polyvalence du carbone à former quatre liaisons en tant que liaisons simples, doubles ou triples. 
Les composés organiques peuvent être soit des hydrocarbures, soit des hydrocarbures fonctionnalisés.
Les hydrocarbures sont entièrement constitués d’atomes de carbone et d’hydrogène. Les alcanes sont des hydrocarbures contenant des liaisons simples. Les alcènes contiennent une ou plusieurs liaisons doubles, tandis que les alcynes contiennent une ou plusieurs liaisons triples.
Les hydrocarbures dont un ou plusieurs atomes d’hydrogène sont substitués par un groupe spécifique d’atomes ou de groupes fonctionnels sont appelés « hydrocarbures fonctionnalisés ». La formule générale des hydrocarbures fonctionnalisés désigne la partie hydrocarbonée par la lettre « R », suivie du groupe fonctionnel spécifique.
Les groupes fonctionnels peuvent être de plusieurs types et avoir des propriétés physiques et chimiques spécifiques. Tous les composés organiques portant un groupe fonctionnel commun appartiennent à la même famille d’hydrocarbures, présentent des propriétés similaires et suivent une nomenclature similaire.
Par exemple, tous les composés organiques avec un atome de carbone portant un groupe fonctionnel -OH sont appelés alcools. En revanche, tous les composés organiques portant des groupes fonctionnels carboxyles sont appelés acides carboxyliques.
Dans l’ensemble, il est essentiel de comprendre la structure, la liaison et les réactions des composés organiques, qu’ils soient naturels ou artificiels, pour comprendre leurs fonctions dans la vie réelle.

Une caractéristique déterminante de ces composés est la présence du carbone comme élément principal, qui est lié à d'autres atomes de carbone et à d'autres éléments tels que l'hydrogène, l'oxygène, l'azote et le soufre. L'existence d'une large gamme de molécules organiques est une conséquence de la capacité des atomes de carbone à former jusqu'à quatre liaisons fortes avec d'autres atomes de carbone, résultant en des chaînes et des cycles de tailles, de formes et de complexités différentes. Cependant, certains composés contenant du carbone, tels que les carbonates, les cyanures et les oxydes simples (CO et CO_2), ne sont généralement pas classés comme des composés organiques.

Les composés organiques les plus simples contiennent uniquement les éléments carbone et hydrogène et sont appelés hydrocarbures. Les hydrocarbures peuvent différer par les types de liaisons carbone-carbone présentes dans leurs molécules. Ceux-ci peuvent être des alcanes (contenant uniquement des liaisons simples), des alcènes (contenant une ou plusieurs liaisons doubles) ou des alcynes (contenant une ou plusieurs liaisons triples). Organic chemistry focuses on carbon compounds called organic compounds. These compounds may come from living things or be made by chemists. Carbon is the main element in them, and it bonds with other carbon atoms as well as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Carbon can form up to four strong bonds. That ability lets carbon atoms build chains and rings of many sizes, shapes, and levels of complexity. Not every carbon-containing substance is classified as organic. Carbonates, cyanides, and simple oxides such as CO and CO2 are usually excluded.

The simplest organic compounds are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen. They can be alkanes with single bonds, alkenes with one or more double bonds, or alkynes with one or more triple bonds.

Hydrocarbons can vary a lot even though they use only two kinds of atoms. Their carbon atoms may form straight chains, branched chains, rings, or combinations of these structures. As the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms changes, properties such as melting point and boiling point usually change in a predictable way.

Adding a functional group creates a new family of compounds called functionalized hydrocarbons. A functional group is a specific atom or group of atoms that mostly controls the properties of the molecule. For example, compounds with an –OH group attached to the hydrocarbon part are alcohols. By convention, alcohols have the general formula R–OH, where R is the hydrocarbon portion.

Compounds with the same functional group belong to the same family. Organic compounds are important in plastics, soaps, perfumes, sweeteners, fabrics, pharmaceuticals, and many other everyday products. Learning their structures and reactions helps explain how these materials work in real life.
