La théorie VSEPR aide à déterminer les géométries de paires d’électrons et les géométries moléculaires.
Une série d’étapes est utilisée pour prédire la géométrie et les angles de liaison de molécules, telles que le trichlorure de phosphore.
La première étape consiste à dessiner la structure de Lewis de la molécule.
Ensuite, comptez le nombre total de groupes d’électrons sur l’atome central. Autour du phosphore, il y a quatre groupes d’électrons : trois paires de liaison et une paire non liante.
Maintenant, déterminez la géométrie de la paire d’électrons. La géométrie de la paire d’électrons est tétraédrique. Cependant, en raison du doublet non liant, la géométrie moléculaire est pyramidale trigonale. Le doublet non liant réduit l’angle de liaison à moins de 109,5°.
Les paires d’électrons de liaison ne sont pas toujours partagées également entre les deux atomes de liaison.
Dans une liaison covalente comme celle de l’acide fluorhydrique, les électrons sont attirés vers l’atome le plus électronégatif, indiqué par une charge partielle. De telles liaisons sont appelées liaisons polaires.
La séparation de charge crée un vecteur appelé moment dipolaire de liaison, qui est indiqué par la lettre grecque μ. Sa valeur est le produit de l’intensité des charges partielles et de la distance entre elles.
Les moments dipolaires sont généralement exprimés en debyes. Un debye est égal à 3,336 × 10−30 coulombmètres.
Le vecteur pointe de l’atome le plus petit vers l’atome le plus électronégatif et indique le moment dipolaire de la liaison. Sa longueur est proportionnelle à l’amplitude de la différence d’électronégativité entre les deux atomes. La plupart des molécules diatomiques contenant des atomes de différents éléments ont des moments dipolaires et sont donc des molécules polaires.
Dans les composés polyatomiques, le moment dipolaire net est déterminé par les moments dipolaires de liaison individuelle et la géométrie du composé.
Considérons une molécule d’eau avec deux liaisons polaires. Il a une forme courbée et est une molécule polaire.
En revanche, une molécule de dioxyde de carbone est linéaire. Les deux liaisons carbone-oxygène sont polaires mais sont orientées dans des directions opposées, annulant le moment dipolaire de l'autre et rendant l'ensemble de la molécule non polaire.

	<li>Utilisez le nombre de paires isolées pour déterminer la structure moléculaire. Si plusieurs arrangements de paires isolées et de liaisons chimiques sont possibles, choisissez celui qui minimisera les répulsions.</li>

<h4>Moment dipolaire d'une molécule</h4>

Lorsque des atomes ayant des électronégativités différentes forment une liaison, les électrons sont attirés vers l’atome le plus électronégatif, laissant un atome avec une charge partielle positive (δ+) et l’autre atome avec une charge partielle négative (δ–). De telles liaisons sont appelées liaisons covalentes polaires, et la séparation des charges donne lieu à un moment dipolaire de liaison. L'amplitude d'un moment dipolaire de liaison est représentée par la lettre grecque µ et est donnée par :

µ = Qr

où Q est l'ampleur des charges partielles (déterminée par la différence d'électronégativité) et r est la distance qui les sépare. Les moments dipolaires sont généralement exprimés en debyes, où un debye est égal à 3,336 × 10−30 C·m.

Le moment dipolaire de la liaison est un vecteur représenté par une flèche pointant le long de la liaison depuis l'atome le moins électronégatif vers l'atome le plus électronégatif, avec un petit signe plus sur l'extrémité la moins électronégative.

Une molécule entière peut également présenter une séparation de charge, en fonction de sa structure moléculaire et de la polarité de chacune de ses liaisons. De telles molécules sont dites polaires. Le moment dipolaire mesure l’étendue de la séparation nette des charges dans la molécule dans son ensemble. Dans les molécules diatomiques, le moment dipolaire de liaison détermine la polarité moléculaire.

Lorsqu'une molécule contient plus d'une liaison, la géométrie doit être prise en compte. Si les liaisons dans une molécule sont disposées de telle sorte que la somme vectorielle de leurs moments de liaison soit égale à zéro, alors la molécule est non polaire (par exemple,CO2). La molécule d’eau a une structure moléculaire courbée et les deux moments de liaison ne s’annulent pas. L’eau est donc une molécule polaire avec un moment dipolaire net.

Molecular shape and molecular polarity can be predicted with VSEPR theory and dipole moments. Start by writing the Lewis structure of the molecule or polyatomic ion. Then count the electron groups around the central atom. Lone pairs and bonds both count as electron groups, and a single, double, or triple bond each counts as one region of electron density.

Use that count to identify the electron-pair geometry. Next, use the number of lone pairs to determine the molecular structure. If more than one arrangement of lone pairs and bonds is possible, choose the one with the fewest repulsions. This step helps show how atoms arrange themselves in space.

Bond polarity depends on electronegativity, which is how strongly an atom pulls shared electrons. When atoms with different electronegativities form a bond, the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. That leaves one atom with a partial positive charge, written as δ+, and the other with a partial negative charge, written as δ−. These are polar covalent bonds.

The charge separation in a polar bond creates a bond dipole moment. Its magnitude is written with the Greek letter μ and follows the relation μ = Qr, where Q is the size of the partial charges and r is the distance between them. Dipole moments are usually measured in debyes. One debye equals 3.336 × 10^−30 C·m. A bond dipole is shown as an arrow pointing from the less electronegative atom toward the more electronegative atom, with a small plus sign on the less electronegative end.

A whole molecule can also have a dipole moment. That depends on both the polarity of its bonds and its molecular shape. In diatomic molecules, the bond dipole determines the molecular polarity. In molecules with more than one bond, the bond dipoles must be added as vectors. If the vector sum is zero, the molecule is nonpolar, as in CO2. Water has a bent molecular structure, so its bond moments do not cancel. As a result, water is a polar molecule with a net dipole moment.
