Polygenic Traits

- Quand plusieurs gènes collaborentpour influencer un phénotype,le résultat est un trait polygénique, à plusieurs gènes. 
La taille de l'humain·e est l'une de ces caractéristiquesqu'on pense influencée par des centaines de locus. 
Bien que chaque gène ait généralement un rôle minimedans la détermination de la taille,leurs effets s'additionnentpour établir la taille atteinte à l'âge adulte. 
La taille humaine varie considérablement,en partie à cause du grand nombre de gènes impliqués. 
Par exemple, la taille minimale pour les femmes adultes,dans une population, peut être d'environ 152cm,et la maximale de 182cm. 
Cependant, il existe des femmes de toutes tailles. 
En reportant sur un graphique la distribution de la taille,on obtient une courbe de Gauss. 
Seules quelques femmes approchent le minimum et le maximum,et la majorité est plus proche de la moyenne, soit 167cm. 
Parfois, un seul phénotype, comme la taille,résultant de plusieurs facteurs génétiques,peut être quantifié et représenté graphiquement. 
De manière importante, cela s'appliqueà beaucoup d'autres caractéristiques polygéniques,comme le poids, la pression sanguine,et même le nombre de stries des empreintes digitales.

Lorsque plus d’un gène est responsable d’un phénotype donné, le trait est considéré comme polygénique. La hauteur humaine est un trait polygénique. Des études ont révélé des centaines de locus qui influencent la hauteur, et on pense qu’il y en a beaucoup plus. En raison du nombre élevé de gènes impliqués, ainsi que des facteurs environnementaux et nutritionnels, la taille varie considérablement au sein d’une population donnée. La répartition de la hauteur forme une courbe en forme de cloche, avec relativement peu d’individus dans la population à des hauteurs minimales ou maximales et la majorité de la population dans la gamme de hauteur moyenne. La plupart des traits polygéniques, comme le poids, la pression artérielle et l’aspect des motifs d’empreintes digitales, se tracent également comme des courbes en forme de cloche.
 
 <h4>La hauteur humaine : un trait polygénique</h4>
 
 Bien que les travaux fondateurs de Mendel sur l’héritage génétique se soient concentrés sur des traits issus de gènes uniques, des expériences telles que des études d’association à l’échelle du génome ont révélé que de nombreux traits humains se développent grâce à la coopération de multiples produits de gènes. La collaboration de nombreux gènes pour influencer un phénotype constitue un trait polygénique (c’est-à-dire “ de nombreux gènes ”).
 
 Un exemple de trait polygénique est la hauteur humaine. Des centaines de locus sont impliqués dans la variabilité de la hauteur humaine, et on croit qu’il y en a plus qui n’ont pas encore été identifiés. Beaucoup de ces gènes affectent directement ou indirectement le cartilage dans les plaques de croissance, qui se trouvent dans les longs os des bras et des jambes.
 
 <h4>Répartition dans la population des traits polygéniques</h4>
 
 La taille humaine varie considérablement, en partie en raison d’un grand nombre de gènes qui l’influencent. La taille est également impactée par des facteurs environnementaux et nutritionnels, tels que si la mère a fumé ou non pendant la grossesse, le régime alimentaire de la mère pendant la grossesse et l’alimentation de l’enfant.
 
 Dans une population où la taille minimale féminine est d’environ 1,5 m et la taille maximale féminine est d’environ 1,8 m, il existe des femmes de toutes les hauteurs entre ces valeurs. Tracer la répartition de la hauteur se traduit par une courbe en forme de cloche, avec relativement peu de femmes approchant les hauteurs minimales ou maximales et la majorité d’entre elles présentant des hauteurs proches de la moyenne de 1,65 m. Polygenic traits are characteristics shaped by many genes acting together. This pattern is different from a single-gene trait, where one gene has a larger effect on the outcome. In polygenic inheritance, each gene adds a small contribution to the final trait.

Height is a common example of a polygenic trait. Many genes influence human height, so the result can vary across a wide range. These small genetic effects combine to produce differences that are easy to see in a population.

Polygenic traits help show why inherited traits are not always simple. The final appearance of a trait depends on the combined effects of several genes. This makes polygenic inheritance an important idea in genetics, especially when studying traits with many possible outcomes.
