Blood Types

Le groupement sanguin ABO divise le sang humain en quatre types en fonction de la présence ou de l’absence de deux antigènes spécifiques, l’antigène A et l’antigène B, à la surface des globules rouges. Ces antigènes sont codés par trois allèles.
L’allèle immunoglobuline A, ou simplement allèle A, code pour l’antigène A à la surface du globule rouge. De même, l’allèle B code pour l’antigène B.
Le troisième allèle - enregistré en minuscule i et appelé allèle O - ne code pas pour l’antigène, ce qui signifie que les globules rouges n’ont ni antigène A ni antigène B.
Étant donné que la présence de l'antigène dicte le groupe sanguin, les allèles A et B sont dominants sur l'allèle O, qui ne produit aucun antigène. 
Les humains sont des organismes diploïdes, et ils reçoivent donc deux copies des allèles, une de chaque parent. Une personne avec deux copies de l’allèle A ou une copie de A et l’allèle récessif O a du sang de type A. De même, une personne avec deux copies de l’allèle B ou une copie de B et l’allèle récessif O a du sang de type B.
Le fait d’avoir une copie de l’allèle A et une copie de l’allèle B donne du sang de type AB, un exemple de codominance, où les deux antigènes sont exprimés à la surface des globules rouges. Le sang humain est classé en différents types en fonction de la présence d'antigènes à la surface des globules rouges et d'anticorps dans le plasma. Une identification correcte du groupe sanguin est essentielle pour une transfusion sanguine réussie. La Société internationale de transfusion sanguine a identifié 38 groupes sanguins humains sur la base des antigènes de surface présents sur les globules rouges. Les types sanguins les plus courants sont les groupes sanguins ABO, Rh et MNS.

Groupe sanguin ABO

Les antigènes ABO sont des glycoprotéines codées par des gènes présents sur le chromosome 9. Les globules rouges possèdent un fragment glycoprotéique de base composé de fructose, de galactose et de N-acétylglucosamine appelé antigène H. Le sang contenant uniquement l’antigène H à la surface des globules rouges est classé dans le groupe sanguin O. L'ajout d'une molécule glucidique terminale - la N-acétylgalactosamine à l'antigène H constitue l'antigène-A. La présence d'un galactose terminal sur l'antigène H donne l'antigène B. Dans un groupe sanguin rare appelé groupe sanguin Bombay, les patients manquent d'antigène H sur les globules rouges. Le groupe sanguin Bombay est une maladie extrêmement rare, avec une fréquence aussi faible qu'environ 4 par million d'habitants.

Groupe sanguin MNS

Les antigènes des groupes sanguins MNS sont exprimés à la surface des globules rouges. Ceux-ci sont codés par deux gènes hautement polymorphes, la glycophorine A (GYPA) et la glycophorine B (GYPB). Le GYPA code pour l'antigène M ou N, tandis que le GYPB code pour l'antigène S ou s et l'antigène N (« N »). Ces gènes peuvent se recombiner pour produire plus de 40 antigènes différents.

Groupe sanguin Rh

Le facteur Rh est un autre antigène présent à la surface des globules rouges. En fonction de sa présence ou de son absence, une personne peut être classée comme Rh positif ou négatif. Landsteiner et Wiener ont inventé le terme facteur Rh en 1937. Plus tard, l'alloanticorps humain a été rebaptisé anti-D. Jusqu’à présent, plus de 45 antigènes différents ont été identifiés dans le système Rh. Le groupement sanguin RH est le plus souvent utilisé avec le groupement sanguin ABO.

Human blood types help determine safe blood transfusion matching. Blood is classified by antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies in the plasma. Correct blood typing matters because an unsafe match can affect transfusion success. The International Society of Blood Transfusion has identified 38 human blood types, and ABO, Rh, and MNS are among the most common.

The ABO blood group depends on antigens made by genes on chromosome 9. Red blood cells carry a base glycoprotein called the H-antigen. If only the H-antigen is present, the blood type is O. Adding N-acetylgalactosamine produces antigen A, while adding terminal galactose produces antigen B.

A rare blood group called the Bombay blood group is different because these patients lack H-antigen on red blood cells. This condition is extremely rare, with an occurrence as low as about 4 per million people. The ABO system therefore includes both common blood types and a rare exception that changes how blood is classified.

The MNS blood group is another red blood cell system. Its antigens are encoded by two highly polymorphic genes, glycophorin A (GYPA) and glycophorin B (GYPB). GYPA codes for M or N antigen. GYPB codes for S or s antigen and also the N antigen. These genes can recombine to produce more than 40 different antigens.

The Rh blood group is based on the presence or absence of Rh factor on the red blood cell surface. A person is classified as Rh positive or Rh negative depending on that antigen. Landsteiner and Wiener coined the term Rh-factor in 1937, and the human alloantibody was later renamed anti-D. More than 45 Rh antigens have been identified, and Rh grouping is most often used together with ABO blood grouping.
