Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy: Overview

Lorsque le rayonnement électromagnétique traverse un matériau, les atomes ou les molécules passent d'un état d'énergie inférieur à un état d'énergie supérieur en absorbant le rayonnement correspondant à la différence d'énergie entre les deux états. L'absorption du rayonnement infrarouge (IR) provoque des transitions entre les niveaux d'énergie vibratoire d'une molécule. Par conséquent, la spectroscopie IR est un outil analytique utile pour déterminer la structure moléculaire des molécules.

Différents composés présentent des propriétés uniques en raison de leurs groupes fonctionnels, ce qui permet d'utiliser la spectroscopie IR pour identifier les groupes fonctionnels présents. La spectroscopie IR vibrationnelle est réalisée dans la gamme de longueurs d'onde de 2,5 à 25 µm. Une molécule est considérée comme active en IR si elle présente un changement de moment dipolaire pendant la vibration lors de l'absorption du rayonnement IR. Pour qu'une molécule absorbe efficacement le rayonnement IR, ses vibrations doivent faire fluctuer ses moments dipolaires, lui permettant d'interagir avec le champ électromagnétique de la lumière IR.

Étant donné que différents groupes fonctionnels absorbent le rayonnement IR à des fréquences variables, le spectre IR est semblable à une « empreinte digitale » propre à chaque molécule.
