Dans les alcanes linéaires, la fragmentation des ions moléculaires, qui sont des cations radicaux formés par le retrait d’un seul électron d’une molécule mère, se produit principalement loin de l’extrémité de la chaîne pour former des carbocations et des radicaux stables.
Par exemple, considérons le spectre de masse de l’hexane. Les pics proéminents sont séparés par 14 u, ce qui indique la possibilité d’une fragmentation initiale au niveau de différentes liaisons carbone-carbone adjacentes dans l’hexane.
La fragmentation entre un carbone terminal et son carbone adjacent est moins réalisable en raison de l’instabilité du méthylcarbocation ou du radical méthyle généré. Si cette fragmentation se produit, la formation d’un radical méthyle est prioritaire par rapport au méthylcarbocation.
La logique veut que la fragmentation la plus réalisable aboutisse au carbocation le plus stable, expulsant le radical le plus stable. Dans les spectres de masse de l’hexane, le carbocation butyle est le plus abondant et devient le pic de base.
La fragmentation ultérieure des carbocations avec perte d’hydrogène est responsable des petits pics près de chaque pic proéminent.

Mass Spectrometry: Long-Chain Alkane Fragmentation

Les ions moléculaires des alcanes linéaires préfèrent se fragmenter au niveau de la liaison carbone-carbone, loin de l'extrémité de la chaîne, car le clivage d'une liaison interne crée un carbocation stable et un radical stable. Par conséquent, les signaux de masse des alcanes linéaires présentent des pics intenses au milieu du graphique du rapport masse/charge, avec des pics plus faibles à chaque extrémité. La fragmentation de chaque liaison carbone-carbone avec la libération d'un groupe méthyle à chaque division conduit à des pics importants dans les spectres de masse séparés par 14 u. Des signaux de masse plus faibles à proximité de chaque pic important résultent d'une fragmentation secondaire au niveau de la liaison carbone-hydrogène.

Par exemple, considérons le schéma de fragmentation du n-hexane illustré à la figure 1 et les spectres de masse correspondants à la figure 2.

Les signaux à un rapport masse/charge de 71, 57, 43, 29 et 15 indiquent que le clivage peut se produire sur toutes les liaisons carbone-carbone de la molécule. Cependant, l'abondance relative de ces pics varie. La différence entre le signal des ions moléculaires et le signal à 71 indique la séparation des groupes méthyles (M.W. = 15 u) des ions moléculaires. La libération supplémentaire d'un groupe CH_2 à partir de ce fragment (M.W. = 14 u) entraîne un signal à 57. Les signaux à 43, 29 et 15 sont dus aux libérations ultérieures de groupes CH_2. L'abondance des signaux à 15 et 71 est minimale en raison de la plus faible probabilité de formation d'un carbocation méthyle instable ou d'un radical méthyle, respectivement. Le pic de base à 43 indique la fragmentation la plus préférée, qui donne une paire de carbocation stable et de radical.

Mass spectra of linear alkanes show a clear fragmentation pattern. The molecular ion often breaks at a carbon-carbon bond away from the end of the chain. This cleavage forms a stable carbocation and a stable radical, so the middle of the mass-to-charge plot usually has the strongest signals while the ends are weaker.

As each bond breaks, a methyl group is lost and the main peaks in the spectrum appear 14 u apart. Smaller peaks near each main signal can also appear. These come from secondary fragmentation at a carbon-hydrogen bond.

n-Hexane shows this pattern well. Its spectrum has signals at mass-to-charge ratios of 71, 57, 43, 29, and 15. These peaks show that cleavage can happen at every carbon-carbon bond in the molecule, but the peak heights are not the same.

The difference between the molecular ion signal and the signal at 71 shows loss of a methyl group with a mass of 15 u. Loss of another CH2 group with a mass of 14 u gives the signal at 57. The signals at 43, 29, and 15 come from later CH2 losses.

The peaks at 15 and 71 are small because forming a methyl carbocation or a methyl radical is least likely. The base peak at 43 is the most favored fragmentation. It gives the most stable pair of carbocation and radical.
