Archimedes' Principle

Considérons un objet au repos, complètement immergé dans un fluide. Il déplace un volume égal de fluide pour occuper cet espace.

Ce volume de fluide est maintenant agi par la même force de flottabilité agissant précédemment sur l’objet. Comme le volume du fluide est au repos, la force de flottabilité est équilibrée par son poids.
Ainsi, l’intensité de la force de flottabilité agissant sur un objet dans un fluide est égale au poids du fluide déplacé par celui-ci. C'est ce qu'on appelle le principe d'Archimède.
Mathématiquement, la force de flottabilité est égale au produit de la masse du fluide déplacé et de l’accélération due à la gravité.
En utilisant la relation entre la masse et la densité, la force de flottabilité peut également être représentée comme le produit de la densité du fluide, du volume du fluide déplacé et de l’accélération due à la gravité.

Le principe d'Archimède stipule qu'une force de poussée vers le haut exercée sur un corps immergé partiellement ou totalement dans un fluide est égale au poids du fluide déplacé par celui-ci. Pour comprendre quelle force de poussée est nécessaire pour faire flotter un objet, réfléchissons à ce qui se passe lorsqu'un objet immergé est retiré d'un fluide. Si l'objet n'était pas dans le fluide, l'espace occupé par l'objet serait rempli par le fluide ayant un poids wfl. Ce poids est soutenu par le fluide environnant, donc la force de poussée doit être égale à wfl, le poids du fluide déplacé par l'objet.

Ce principe est nommé d'après le mathématicien grec Archimède (ca. 287-212 avant J.-C.), qui a énoncé ce principe bien avant que les concepts de force ne soient bien établis. Archimedes' principle explains buoyant force in a fluid. An upward buoyant force acts on an object that is partially or fully immersed in a fluid. This force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

To see why an object floats, imagine removing a submerged object from the fluid. The space it occupied would be filled by fluid with weight w_fl. That weight is supported by the surrounding fluid, so the buoyant force must match the weight of the displaced fluid.

The principle is named for the Greek mathematician Archimedes, who lived around 287 to 212 BCE. He stated the idea long before the modern concept of force was fully developed. The same principle applies whether the body is only partly submerged or completely under the fluid.

Fluid pressure creates the buoyant force. The pressure force acts perpendicular to the surface of the body. The force at the bottom points upward, while the force at the top points downward. Forces at the sides point inward.

Because the bottom of the body is deeper than the top, the pressure is greater lower down than higher up. This difference creates a net upward force on the object. That upward force is buoyancy.
