Interference and Superposition of Waves

Lorsque deux ondes sont physiquement présentes au même endroit, la perturbation qui en résulte est une troisième onde. Cet effet s’appelle l’interférence.
Mathématiquement, l’interférence peut être décrite par le principe de superposition. Il stipule que si deux ondes ou plus se chevauchent en un même point, l’onde résultante est la somme algébrique des ondes individuelles.
En prenant la somme algébrique, l’amplitude et la phase doivent être prises en compte.
Lorsque deux ondes se superposent en un point de même phase, l'onde résultante a une amplitude égale à la somme des amplitudes de l'onde individuelle. Ce phénomène s’appelle l’interférence constructive.
D'autre part, lorsque deux ondes se superposent en un point de phases opposées, l'amplitude de l'onde résultante est égale à la différence entre les amplitudes des deux ondes individuelles. Ce phénomène est appelé interférence destructrice.
Lorsque des interférences constructives et destructrices se produisent dans des régions alternatives, nous obtenons un modèle d’interférence.

L'interférence se produit dans les ondes mécaniques, telles que les ondes sonores, les ondes sur une corde et les ondes de surface de l'eau. Les ondes mécaniques correspondent au déplacement physique des particules. Par conséquent, l'interférence implique que le déplacement physique des particules d'un milieu est donné par la somme algébrique des déplacements que les ondes individuelles provoquent. L'interférence se produit également dans d'autres ondes comme les ondes électromagnétiques, auquel cas les champs électrique et magnétique s'ajoutent vectoriellement.

Cependant, le principe de superposition ne s'applique pas à certaines ondes. Cela signifie que l'onde résultante peut ne pas être une simple somme algébrique des ondes individuelles. Dans ce cas, l'effet est non linéaire, ce qui complique la description du phénomène. Ces ondes sont dites ondes non linéaires.

Des bandes alternatives d'interférence constructive et destructive peuvent conduire à des motifs d'interférence, une signature évidente du phénomène d'ondes se produisant dans la nature.

Wave interference patterns form when two waves of the same nature occupy the same region at the same time. The combined effect is the sum of the individual wave effects. Interference does not mean that one wave changes how the other wave travels.

This idea applies to mechanical waves, including sound waves, waves on a string, and surface water waves. Mechanical waves move through a medium, so interference shows up as the algebraic sum of particle displacements in that medium. The same principle also applies to electromagnetic waves, where the electric and magnetic fields add together vectorially.

Not every wave follows simple superposition. For some waves, the result is not just a direct sum of the separate waves. These are nonlinear waves, and their behavior is harder to describe.

Interference can create alternating bands of constructive and destructive interference. These bands form an interference pattern, which is a clear sign that wave behavior is present in nature.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
