Reflection of Waves

Lorsqu’une onde se propageant rencontre la frontière d’un milieu, elle est réfléchie. L’onde de la source, se propageant dans l’air, qui frappe la limite du milieu est appelée onde incidente. L’onde sortante est appelée onde réfléchie.
Considérons maintenant la propagation des ondes à travers une ficelle tendue, attachée à une extrémité à un crochet fixé au mur. L’onde se déplace vers l’hameçon et est réfléchie.
Comme la frontière du milieu n’est pas libre de se déplacer avec les oscillations de l’onde, on parle de condition aux limites fixes.
Dans ce cas, l’onde réfléchie est déphasée de 180° par rapport à l’onde incidente.
En supposant qu’aucune perte ne s’est produite, l’amplitude de l’onde réfléchie reste inchangée.
Lorsque la frontière du milieu est libre de se déplacer avec les oscillations de l'onde, on parle de condition aux limites libres.
Dans ce cas, l’onde réfléchie a la même amplitude et la même phase que l’onde incidente.

Un exemple courant de ceci est lorsque quelqu'un crie à une certaine distance d'une falaise et entend l'écho de sa voix. Les ondes sonores (ondes longitudinales) se déplaçant dans l'air se réfléchissent sur la falaise avoisinante. De même, en soulevant une extrémité d'une corde dont l'autre extrémité est attachée à un mur, une impulsion (onde transversale) se propage à travers la corde, qui se réfléchit en atteignant le mur. Dans ce cas, l'extrémité attachée agit comme la frontière de l'onde, qui n'est pas libre de se déplacer avec les oscillations.

Rappelez-vous la troisième loi du mouvement de Newton, qui affirme que chaque action a une réaction égale et opposée. Lorsque l'onde incidente rencontre le mur, la corde exerce une force ascendante sur le mur, et le mur réagit en exerçant une force égale et opposée sur la corde. Ainsi, dans le cas d'une réflexion sur une frontière fixe, une crête devient un creux après la réflexion et vice versa.

Cependant, si la frontière n'est pas fixe et est libre de se déplacer avec les oscillations de l'onde, la phase de l'onde réfléchie ne s'inverse pas. Par exemple, si la corde est attachée à un anneau solide capable de glisser le long d'un poteau sans friction, l'extrémité de la corde est libre de monter et descendre. L'onde rencontre la frontière libre en appliquant une force ascendante sur l'anneau, faisant monter l'anneau. L'anneau atteint la hauteur maximale égale à l'amplitude de l'onde, puis accélère vers le bas vers la position d'équilibre en raison de la tension dans la corde. Ainsi, si l'onde incidente était un creux, l'onde réfléchie serait également un creux dans le cas d'une frontière libre.

Wave reflection happens when a wave reaches a boundary between two media and bounces back. A familiar example is an echo, where sound waves in air reflect from a cliff. Sound waves are longitudinal waves, while a pulse on a string is a transverse wave.

A pulse on a string tied to a wall reflects when it reaches the fixed end. The wall acts as a boundary that cannot move with the oscillation. By Newton’s third law, the string pushes on the wall and the wall pushes back with an equal and opposite force. At a fixed boundary, a crest becomes a trough after reflection, and a trough becomes a crest.

Reflection is different when the boundary is free to move with the wave. If the string is tied to a solid ring that slides along a frictionless pole, the end of the string can move up and down. The wave pushes the ring upward, and the ring rises to a height equal to the wave’s amplitude before tension in the string pulls it back down. In this case, the reflected wave is not inverted, so a trough reflects as a trough.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
