Propagation of Waves

Une onde peut se propager d’un milieu à un autre, chacun ayant une densité différente. Dans un tel cas, l’onde incidente se propage en partie et est en partie réfléchie.
La vitesse de propagation des ondes serait relativement plus faible dans le milieu plus dense que dans le milieu plus rare.
Une quantité d’indice de réfraction compare la vitesse des ondes électromagnétiques dans différents milieux. Elle s’exprime comme le rapport entre la vitesse de la lumière dans le vide et la vitesse de la lumière dans un milieu donné.
Si l’onde se déplace du milieu le plus dense vers le milieu plus rare, les ondes réfléchies et transmises sont en phase avec l’onde incidente, mais leur amplitude est réduite.
En revanche, si le laser est placé de l’autre côté, l’onde se propage du milieu le plus rare au milieu le plus dense. Dans ce cas, l’onde réfléchie est déphasée de 180° par rapport à l’onde incidente. L’onde transmise reste en phase avec l’onde incidente.

Les deux ondes réfléchies et transmises ont des amplitudes inférieures à celle de l'onde incidente. Si la tension dans les deux cordes est la même, la vitesse de l'onde est plus basse dans la corde avec une plus haute densité linéaire de masse.

En revanche, considérons la propagation des ondes d'une corde de haute densité linéaire de masse à une corde de faible densité linéaire de masse. Dans un tel cas, l'onde réfléchie est en phase avec l'onde incidente, tout comme l'onde transmise. Les deux ondes réfléchies et transmises ont des amplitudes inférieures à celle de l'onde incidente.

Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
