Dans un spectromètre infrarouge dispersif, le rayonnement produit par le fil chaud est divisé par des miroirs en deux faisceaux parallèles d’intensité égale qui traversent les cellules de référence et d’échantillonnage.
Son monochromateur est constitué d’un hacheur de faisceau qui fait passer les faisceaux en alternance vers un prisme à réseau de diffraction à rotation lente qui fait varier la fréquence ou la longueur d’onde du rayonnement.
Un détecteur à thermocouple détecte le rapport d’intensité des deux faisceaux.
Enfin, le signal du détecteur est amplifié, et l’enregistreur dessine le spectre.
Un spectromètre infrarouge à transformée de Fourier implique un interféromètre, dans lequel le rayonnement passe à travers un séparateur de faisceau, un miroir fixe et un miroir mobile, avant d’atteindre l’échantillon.
Le séparateur de faisceau sépare le faisceau en rayonnements déviés et non déviés, qui sont autorisés à tomber sur des miroirs fixes et mobiles, respectivement.
Les deux faisceaux se recombinent au niveau du séparateur pour produire un motif d’interférence ou un interférogramme contenant une large gamme de longueurs d’onde ou de fréquences.
Le détecteur détecte l’interférogramme modifié par l’échantillon, et l’ordinateur extrait les fréquences individuelles à l’aide de l’opération de transformée de Fourier.

IR Spectrometers

Il existe deux principaux spectrophotomètres infrarouges (IR) : les spectromètres IR dispersifs et les spectromètres infrarouges à transformée de Fourier (FTIR). Dans un spectromètre IR dispersif, un faisceau de rayonnement infrarouge produit par un fil chaud est divisé en deux faisceaux parallèles d'intensité égale à l'aide de miroirs. Un faisceau traverse l'échantillon, tandis qu'un autre est un faisceau de référence. Les faisceaux se déplacent ensuite à travers le monochromateur, qui sépare les rayonnements en un spectre continu de différentes fréquences. Le monochromateur se compose d'un hacheur de faisceau à rotation rapide qui alterne les faisceaux d'échantillon et de référence avant qu'ils n'atteignent un réseau de diffraction. Ensuite, le rayonnement passe à travers le détecteur à thermocouple qui mesure le rapport entre les intensités des deux faisceaux. Le signal du détecteur est amplifié, et le spectre résultant est tracé à l'aide de l'enregistreur. Les spectromètres IR dispersifs enregistrent le spectre dans le domaine fréquentiel, ce qui signifie que le spectre est capturé lorsque la fréquence du rayonnement change avec la rotation du réseau de diffraction.

Dans un spectromètre FTIR, le rayonnement produit par la source passe à travers un séparateur de faisceau. Un séparateur de faisceau est un miroir placé à un angle de 45° par rapport au rayonnement entrant et qui sépare le faisceau en rayonnements déviés et non déviés. Ces rayonnements sont ensuite réfléchis par des miroirs fixes et mobiles. Il est important de noter que le mouvement des deux miroirs modifie la longueur du trajet des faisceaux et que le rayonnement réfléchi par les miroirs est combiné dans le séparateur de faisceau. Ainsi, le faisceau combiné produit contient à la fois des motifs d'interférence constructifs et destructeurs en raison des différences de longueur de trajet des rayonnements.

Le faisceau combiné résultant, appelé interférogramme, passe à travers le détecteur. Le détecteur détecte l'interférogramme modifié par l'échantillon, et le processus FT sépare la fréquence d'absorption individuelle de l'interférogramme.

Les spectromètres FTIR sont préférés aux spectromètres IR dispersifs en raison de leur fonctionnement plus rapide et de leur plus grande sensibilité.

IR spectrometers use infrared light to compare a sample beam with a reference beam and record how each one behaves. The two main instruments are dispersive IR spectrometers and Fourier transform infrared, or FTIR, spectrometers.

In a dispersive IR spectrometer, a hot wire produces the infrared beam. Mirrors split it into two equal beams. One beam passes through the sample, and the other serves as the reference. The beams then move into the monochromator, which separates the radiation into a continuous range of frequencies.

The monochromator uses a rapidly rotating beam chopper and a diffraction grating. The chopper alternates the sample and reference beams before they reach the grating. After that, a thermocouple detector measures the ratio of the two beam intensities. The detector signal is amplified, and a recorder draws the spectrum. Dispersive IR spectrometers record data in the frequency domain, so the spectrum is captured as the grating rotates and the frequency changes.

FTIR spectrometers follow a different path. The source radiation passes through a beam splitter, which is a mirror placed at a 45° angle to the incoming beam. The splitter divides the beam into deflected and undeflected parts. These parts fall on fixed and moving mirrors, and the changing mirror motion changes the path length of the beams. When the beams return to the beam splitter, they combine and produce both constructive and destructive interference.

Constructive interference happens when wave peaks line up. Destructive interference happens when a peak meets a trough and the waves partly cancel. The combined beam is called an interferogram. It then passes through the detector, which measures the interferogram after it has been modified by the sample. The FT process separates the individual absorption frequencies from that pattern. FTIR spectrometers are often preferred because they work faster and are more sensitive than dispersive IR spectrometers.
