Les ions moléculaires cycloalcanes sont plus stables que les ions moléculaires alcanes linéaires ou ramifiés.
Par exemple, le signal ionique moléculaire du cyclohexane au rapport masse/charge de 84 affiche une intensité plus forte que le pic d'ions moléculaires de l'hexane.
L’ion moléculaire du cyclohexane se clive pour produire une molécule d’éthylène et un nouveau cation radical avec un rapport masse/charge de 56. Ce cation radical est relativement stable et constitue le pic de base du spectre. 
Dans les cycloalcanes ramifiés, outre la fragmentation en éthylène et en cation radical butyle, une autre fragmentation renforce la perte de la chaîne latérale de l’ion moléculaire. Par exemple, l’ion moléculaire méthylcyclopentane perd sa chaîne latérale méthyle pour former le cation cyclopentyle.
Le cation cyclopentyle subit ensuite une fragmentation pour produire une molécule d’éthylène et un cation radical propyle.

En spectrométrie de masse, les cycloalcanes présentent des schémas de fragmentation distincts en raison de la stabilité inhérente de leurs ions moléculaires par rapport aux alcanes linéaires ou ramifiés. La structure cyclique des cycloalcanes confère une stabilité supplémentaire aux ions moléculaires, ce qui se traduit souvent par des pics ioniques importants dans le spectre de masse.

Par exemple, les ions moléculaires du cyclohexane ont un rapport masse/charge (m/z) de 84, ce qui tend à produire un signal plus fort que les alcanes linéaires comme l'hexane. Cette stabilité provient de la structure cyclique fermée, qui stabilise l'ion. Une voie de fragmentation courante pour le cyclohexane implique la perte d'une molécule d'éthylène (C₂H₄), laissant derrière elle un cation radical avec un m/z de 56. Ce cation résultant est très stable et forme fréquemment le pic de base, le signal le plus intense du spectre de masse.

Les cycloalcanes ramifiés, comme le méthylcyclopentane, présentent des voies de fragmentation supplémentaires dues aux chaînes latérales. En plus de la perte d'éthylène typique, l'ion moléculaire peut également perdre des chaînes latérales, comme un groupe méthyle (CH₃). Par exemple, l'ion moléculaire peut perdre un radical méthyle (CH₃•), ce qui donne un cation cyclopentyle. Ce cation cyclopentyle se fragmente davantage, ce qui conduit généralement à la perte d'éthylène, ce qui donne un cation radical propyle stable.

Ces schémas de fragmentation démontrent comment les structures cycliques et la ramification affectent la stabilité des ions dans le spectromètre de masse. La perte caractéristique de petites molécules comme l'éthylène et les chaînes latérales produit des cations très stables, qui sont observés sous forme de pics importants dans le spectre.

Cycloalkane ions in mass spectrometry often give strong peaks because the ring structure helps stabilize the molecular ion. Compared with linear or branched alkanes, this added stability changes how the molecule breaks apart. As a result, cycloalkanes can produce prominent signals in the mass spectrum.

Cyclohexane is a clear example. Its molecular ion has an m/z of 84, and this peak is often stronger than the signal from hexane, a linear alkane. The closed ring helps hold the ion together, which makes the molecular ion more stable.

A common fragmentation path for cyclohexane is the loss of ethylene, C2H4. After this loss, a radical cation with an m/z of 56 remains. This ion is highly stable and often becomes the base peak, which is the most intense peak in the spectrum.

Branched cycloalkanes, such as methyl cyclopentane, can fragment in more than one way because of the side chain. Along with the usual loss of ethylene, the molecular ion may also lose a methyl group, CH3. This can form a cyclopentyl cation.

The cyclopentyl cation can fragment again. It usually loses ethylene and forms a stable propyl radical cation. These patterns show how ring size and branching affect ion stability. The loss of small molecules like ethylene and side chains often produces the most prominent peaks.

Cycloalkenes can break apart in a mass spectrometer through retro-Diels–Alder fragmentation. In this process, two carbon-carbon bonds in the ring split, and ethene is released.
