Le tautomère d’énol des composés carbonylés peut subir une réaction de nitrosation, où un deuxième groupe carbonyle est introduit pour former une 1,2-dicétone. Cette réaction de nitrosation se produit par un mécanisme en plusieurs étapes.
Initialement, le nitrite de sodium dans l'acide chlorhydrique produit l'acide faible « acide nitreux », qui, lors de la protonation, donne un ion oxonium.
La perte d’eau de l’ion oxonium génère un ion nitrosonium avec un azote électrophile. Ainsi, l’azote est sensible à une attaque nucléophile par l’énol, ce qui donne un composé nitrosé instable.
Le composé nitroso subit une tautomérisation, où l’hydrogène attaché au carbone azoté est transféré à l’oxygène du groupe nitroso, produisant un oxime. Une liaison hydrogène entre le groupe hydroxyle de l'oxime et l'oxygène carbonyle de la cétone stabilise l'oxime.
Enfin, l’hydrolyse de l’oxime donne le produit 1,2-dicétone.
Les composés carbonylés asymétriques subissent des réactions de nitrosation au niveau de l’atome de carbone le plus substitué, générant des 2,3-dicétones comme produit.

Comme le montre la figure 4, la tautomérisation du composé nitroso implique le transfert de l'atome d'hydrogène du carbone vers l'oxygène du groupe nitroso, formant ainsi une oxime stable. La stabilité de l’oxime est due à la liaison hydrogène entre le groupe hydroxyle de l’oxime et l’oxygène carbonyle de la cétone. L'hydrolyse de l'oxime entraîne la formation de 1,2-dicétone comme produit final.

Nitrosation of enols is a route for making 1,2-diketones. In this reaction, the enol tautomer of a ketone reacts with sodium nitrite in hydrochloric acid. After hydrolysis, the product is a 1,2-diketone.

The reaction begins when hydrochloric acid converts sodium nitrite into an oxonium ion. The loss of a water molecule from this intermediate forms the nitrosonium ion. This ion is the electrophile, meaning it accepts electrons in the next step.

The enol tautomer then attacks the nitrosonium ion. This step gives an unstable nitroso compound. The nitroso compound can tautomerize, which means a hydrogen atom moves from carbon to the oxygen of the nitroso group.

This hydrogen shift forms a stable oxime. The oxime is stabilized by a hydrogen bond between its hydroxyl group and the ketone carbonyl oxygen. Hydrolysis of the oxime then produces the final 1,2-diketone.

The reaction is regioselective. That means the second carbonyl group is added mainly at the more-substituted carbon. This selectivity helps determine where the new diketone group appears in the product.
