Thermodynamic Systems

En thermodynamique, les objets observés sont considérés comme un système, et tous les objets environnants, en dehors des limites du système, sont l'environnement.
Une voiture, y compris le carburant à l’intérieur de son réservoir de carburant, peut être considérée comme un système. La route ainsi que la zone environnante sont l’environnement.
Si la voiture est à l’arrêt, elle n’échange aucune matière ni énergie avec l’environnement. Un tel système est appelé un système isolé.
Lorsque le moteur de la voiture s’allume, la combustion du carburant évacue les gaz d’échappement, les roues subissent la force de frottement due à la route, faisant avancer la voiture. Ici, la matière et l’énergie sont échangées avec l’environnement, et la voiture en mouvement peut donc être considérée comme un système ouvert.
Si le moteur de la voiture est éteint, la force de frottement entre les roues de la voiture et la route arrête progressivement la voiture. Ici, seule l’énergie est échangée entre le système et l’environnement. Un tel système est appelé système fermé.

Un système thermodynamique est un ensemble d'objets dont les propriétés thermodynamiques sont d'intérêt. On considère que le système est intégré à son environnement ou ses alentours. Le système et son environnement peuvent échanger de la chaleur et effectuer du travail sur eux-mêmes à travers une frontière qui les sépare. Cependant, les alentours immédiats du système interagissent directement avec celui-ci et ont donc une influence beaucoup plus forte sur son comportement et ses propriétés.

Prenons un exemple de thé qui bout dans une bouilloire. Le thé et la bouilloire ensemble forment un système. Si le couvercle de la bouilloire est ouvert, la vapeur provenant du thé bouillant s'échappe vers les alentours, ce qui est un exemple de système ouvert. Maintenant, si le couvercle de la bouilloire est fermé, la vapeur ne peut pas s'échapper, c'est-à-dire que la matière ne peut pas s'échapper, mais l'énergie sous forme de chaleur est échangée avec les alentours. Donc, il s'agit d'un système fermé.

Cependant, si le thé chaud est versé dans un thermos, ni la matière ni l'énergie ne peuvent être échangées avec les alentours pendant un certain temps. Ce type de système devient un système isolé.

En réalité, aucun système ne peut être isolé indéfiniment. Dans le cas d'un thermos, le thé finira par refroidir, ce qui indique qu'un échange d'énergie a eu lieu entre le système et les alentours.

Lorsque le thé à l'intérieur du thermos atteint la même température que les alentours, le système et les alentours sont en équilibre thermique.

En mécanique, l'équilibre est défini par l'équilibre entre les forces et les couples dans le système. Cependant, en thermodynamique, il est essentiel d'étudier les processus de transfert de chaleur entre le système et les alentours, ce qui conduit à l'équilibre thermique du système. Le concept d'équilibre thermique mène finalement à la loi zéro de la thermodynamique. Cette loi s'applique également aux différentes parties d'un système fermé et stipule que la température partout à l'intérieur du système doit être la même si le système a atteint l'équilibre thermique.

A thermodynamic system is the part of the world that scientists study for its heat and energy behavior. It sits inside a surrounding environment, or surroundings. The system and the surroundings can exchange heat and do work across the boundary that separates them. The immediate surroundings affect the system most strongly because they interact with it directly.

A kettle of boiling tea shows how this works in everyday life. The tea and the kettle together form the system. If the lid is open, steam escapes into the surroundings. That makes it an open system because matter can leave.

If the lid is closed, steam cannot escape. Matter stays inside, but heat can still pass between the system and the surroundings. In that case, the kettle acts as a closed system. If the hot tea is poured into a thermos, then neither matter nor energy can be exchanged for a time. That is an isolated system.

In reality, no system stays isolated forever. The tea in the thermos will eventually cool down, which shows that energy exchange still occurred with the surroundings. When the tea and the surroundings reach the same temperature, they are in thermal equilibrium. In thermodynamics, this idea is more important than the force and torque balance used in mechanics.

Thermal equilibrium also leads to the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. This law applies to the different parts of a closed system as well. It states that if a system has reached thermal equilibrium, the temperature must be the same everywhere inside it.
