Thermodynamic Systems

In thermodynamics, the objects under observation are considered a system, and all the surrounding objects, outside the system&#39;s boundary,&#160; are the environment.
A car, including the fuel inside its fuel tank, can be considered a system. The road along with the surrounding area is the environment.
If the car is stationary, it does not exchange any matter or energy with the environment. Such a system is called an isolated system.
When the car engine ignites, the fuel combustion lets out the exhaust gasses, the wheels experience the frictional force due to the road, moving the car forward. Here, both matter and energy are exchanged with the environment, and hence the car in motion can be considered an open system.
If the car&#39;s engine is turned off, the frictional force between the car wheels and the road gradually halts the car. Here, only energy, is exchanged between the system and the environment. Such a system is called a closed system.

A thermodynamic system is a set of objects whose thermodynamic properties are of interest. The system is considered to be embedded in its surroundings or the environment. The system and its environment can exchange heat and do work on each other through a boundary that separates them. However, the immediate surroundings of the system interact with it directly and therefore have a much stronger influence on its behavior and properties.
Consider an example of&#160; tea boiling in a kettle. The tea and the kettle together are a system. If the kettle&#160; lid is kept open, steam from the boiling tea escapes to the surroundings, which is an example of an open system. Now, if the kettle lid is closed, the steam cannot escape, i.e., matter cannot escape, but the energy in the form of heat is exchanged with the surroundings. Hence it becomes a closed system.
However, if the hot tea is poured into a thermos, neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with the surroundings for a specific time. This type of&#160; system becomes an isolated system.
In reality, any system cannot be isolated infinitely. In the case of a thermos, the tea will eventually cool down, indicating that energy exchange took place between the system and the surroundings.
When the tea inside the thermos attains the same temperature as the surroundings, the system and the surroundings are in thermal equilibrium.
In mechanics, equilibrium is defined by the balance between the forces and the torques in the system. However, in thermodynamics, it is essential to study the heat transfer processes between the system and the surroundings, leading to the system&#39;s thermal equilibrium. The concept of thermal equilibrium eventually leads to the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. This law&#160; is equally applicable to the different parts of a closed system and requires that the temperature everywhere inside the system be the same if the system has reached thermal equilibrium.

A thermodynamic system is the part of the world that scientists study for its heat and energy behavior. It sits inside a surrounding environment, or surroundings. The system and the surroundings can exchange heat and do work across the boundary that separates them. The immediate surroundings affect the system most strongly because they interact with it directly.

A kettle of boiling tea shows how this works in everyday life. The tea and the kettle together form the system. If the lid is open, steam escapes into the surroundings. That makes it an open system because matter can leave.

If the lid is closed, steam cannot escape. Matter stays inside, but heat can still pass between the system and the surroundings. In that case, the kettle acts as a closed system. If the hot tea is poured into a thermos, then neither matter nor energy can be exchanged for a time. That is an isolated system.

In reality, no system stays isolated forever. The tea in the thermos will eventually cool down, which shows that energy exchange still occurred with the surroundings. When the tea and the surroundings reach the same temperature, they are in thermal equilibrium. In thermodynamics, this idea is more important than the force and torque balance used in mechanics.

Thermal equilibrium also leads to the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. This law applies to the different parts of a closed system as well. It states that if a system has reached thermal equilibrium, the temperature must be the same everywhere inside it.
