Pressure and Volume in an Adiabatic Process

Considérons un volume de molécules d’air s’élevant dans l’atmosphère. Comme la pression diminue avec l’altitude, les molécules d’air tentent de maintenir la même pression en augmentant leur volume sous un processus adiabatique.
Le changement d’énergie interne est écrit en termes de capacité calorifique molaire et réorganisé.
En utilisant la loi des gaz parfaits, en la dérivant et en réarrangeant les termes, on obtient une expression du changement de température.
En équivalant les équations de changement de température obtenues à partir de la première loi de la thermodynamique et de la loi des gaz parfaits et en réarrangeant, on obtient une équation en termes de capacité calorifique molaire.
Divisez l’ensemble par pV et utilisez la relation entre les capacités thermiques molaires. L’équation peut être simplifiée davantage à l’aide de leur rapport.
Lors de l’intégration et en utilisant une expression mathématique générale pour les logarithmes, la condition pour qu’un gaz parfait subisse un processus adiabatique est obtenue en termes de pression et de volume.
De même, les conditions des processus adiabatiques en termes de température-volume et de pression-température peuvent être écrites.

La dilatation libre d'un gaz est un processus adiabatique. Cependant, il existe quelques différences entre la dilatation libre et la dilatation adiabatique. Pendant la dilatation libre, aucun travail n'est effectué et il n'y a aucun changement d'énergie interne. Mais, pour une dilatation adiabatique, un travail est effectué et il y a un changement d'énergie interne. Pendant un processus adiabatique, la relation entre la pression et le volume est obtenue à partir de la condition pour le processus adiabatique, qui est la suivante :

Cependant, pour un processus de dilatation libre, cette condition n'est pas respectée même si la dilatation est adiabatique. De plus, dans un processus de dilatation libre, le gaz n'est en équilibre qu'aux points initial et final. Ainsi, sur un diagramme pV, seuls ces points initial et final peuvent être représentés, pas la dilatation elle-même. En plus de cela, la température initiale et finale pour un processus adiabatique sont liées par l'expression suivante :

Free expansion shows how pressure, volume, and temperature behave when a gas expands without doing work. It is an adiabatic process, but it is not the same as adiabatic expansion. In free expansion, no work is done and the internal energy does not change. In adiabatic expansion, work is done and the internal energy changes.

For an adiabatic process, the pressure-volume relation comes from the adiabatic condition. That relation does not apply to free expansion, even though the expansion is adiabatic. The gas is in equilibrium only at the start and the end of free expansion. Because of that, only the initial and final points can be shown on a pV diagram, not the path of the expansion.

The temperature behavior is also different. For adiabatic expansion, the initial and final temperatures are linked by an equation. For free expansion, the internal energy stays the same, so the initial and final temperatures are equal. This means the two states lie on the same isotherm, or constant-temperature line, on a pV diagram.

If the gas is ideal, a constant temperature means the product of pressure and volume does not change. So for free expansion, pressure and volume can be written with the same value of pV at the initial and final states. This makes free expansion a useful case for comparing adiabatic behavior with a process that changes volume without changing internal energy.
