Electromagnetic Waves

Considérons une charge électrique statique. Il crée un champ électrique stationnaire autour de lui. Lorsque la charge commence à se déplacer, un champ magnétique est en outre produit orthogonalement à la direction de la charge en mouvement.
Si une charge en mouvement accélère en oscillant autour d’un point, le champ électrique qui l’entoure commence également à osciller.
Selon la loi d'Ampère-Maxwell, ce champ électrique variant dans le temps produit un courant de déplacement, qui induit un autre champ magnétique variant dans le temps perpendiculaire au champ électrique.
D'après la loi de Faraday, un champ magnétique variant dans le temps, à son tour, produit un champ électrique, et ce processus se poursuit.
L’induction séquentielle des deux champs entraîne des champs électriques et magnétiques auto-entretenus dans des régions plus éloignées de leur origine.
Ces champs se propagent dans l’espace, créant des ondes électromagnétiques qui n’ont pas besoin d’un milieu pour soutenir ce mouvement.
Les ondes électromagnétiques produites ont la même fréquence que la fréquence d’oscillation de la charge électrique accélérée.
Ces ondes sont transversales, car les champs électriques et magnétiques constitutifs oscillent perpendiculairement et en phase l’un à l’autre et sont également perpendiculaires à la direction de propagation.

James Clerk Maxwell a formulé une théorie unique combinant tous les effets électriques et magnétiques connus par les scientifiques à l'époque, appelant les phénomènes prédits par sa théorie "ondes électromagnétiques". Il a rassemblé tout le travail qui avait été effectué par des physiciens brillants tels que Oersted, Coulomb, Gauss et Faraday et a ajouté ses propres idées pour développer la théorie globale de l'électromagnétisme. Les équations de Maxwell, combinées à la loi de force de Lorentz, englobent toutes les lois de l'électricité et du magnétisme. Cependant, la symétrie introduite par Maxwell dans son cadre mathématique peut ne pas être immédiatement apparente ; la loi de Faraday décrit comment des champs magnétiques changeants produisent des champs électriques. Maxwell’s equations explain how electric and magnetic fields work together to create electromagnetic waves. James Clerk Maxwell brought together the ideas of Oersted, Coulomb, Gauss, and Faraday and built a single theory of electromagnetism. Together with the Lorentz force law, his equations describe the laws of electricity and magnetism.

A key part of Maxwell’s work is the symmetry in the equations. Faraday’s law shows that a changing magnetic field produces an electric field. Maxwell added the displacement current, which comes from a changing electric field and produces a magnetic field.

The two equations are similar in form, except for the missing terms caused by the absence of magnetic monopoles. This symmetry between changing magnetic fields and changing electric fields is what makes electromagnetic waves possible. It helps explain how combined electric and magnetic waves can move through space.

One way to picture this process is to imagine a high-frequency alternating current that creates a time-varying magnetic field. Faraday’s law says that this changing magnetic field induces a time-varying electric field around the edge of the surface. The displacement current source for the electric field, like the source in Faraday’s law for the magnetic field, produces only closed loops of field lines.

The changing electric field then creates a magnetic field by the modified Ampère’s law. That changing magnetic field induces another electric field, which then induces another magnetic field. This repeating process continues outward from where it started and creates time-varying electric and magnetic fields farther and farther away. This is the propagation of an electromagnetic wave through space.
