L’hyperventilation comprend une augmentation de la fréquence et de la profondeur de la respiration et peut entraîner une hypocarbie. L’anxiété, l’exercice et l’acidose métabolique sont quelques-unes des causes de l’hyperventilation.

La respiration de Kussmaul est anormalement profonde et rapide, mais son rythme reste constant. Elle résulte généralement d'une stimulation du centre respiratoire due à une acidose métabolique associée à une acidocétose diabétique.

Breathing patterns can be regular, deep, or shallow, and they can also become abnormal. These changes help explain how ventilation is affected in different conditions. Clinically, they are important because they can guide patient evaluation.

Biot's breathing is irregular in both rate and depth. It alternates between deep gasping breaths and apnea, which is a pause in breathing. It may occur with increased intracranial pressure or damage to the brain's respiratory center, such as from stroke, head trauma, or spinal meningitis.

Cheyne-Stokes respiration follows a repeating cycle. Breathing starts slow and shallow, then gradually becomes faster and deeper. It then slows again, becomes shallow, and ends with apnea before the pattern starts over. This pattern can be seen in cardiac failure, hyponatremia, brain injury, drug overdose, increased intracranial pressure, and renal failure. It may also appear with normal aging or at high altitudes.

Kussmaul's breathing is different because it is both deep and rapid, but the pace stays steady. It is often linked to stimulation of the respiratory center from metabolic acidosis. A common example is diabetic ketoacidosis.

Hyperventilation means breathing faster and deeper than usual. It can lead to hypocarbia, which is low carbon dioxide in the blood. Causes include changes in blood gas levels, anxiety, exercise, and metabolic acidosis. Hypoventilation is the opposite pattern and involves shallow, irregular breathing. It may result from overdose of certain anesthetic agents, prolonged bed rest, or conscious splinting of the chest to avoid pain during breathing.
