Numerical Calculations

Les applications d’ingénierie reposent en grande partie sur des calculs numériques, dont les résultats sont représentés dans un format standard.
Dans les calculs numériques, l’équation doit être homogène sur le plan dimensionnel et les termes doivent être exprimés dans les mêmes unités.
L’homogénéité dimensionnelle de l’équation est maintenue quelle que soit l’équation évaluée.
Les nombres sont arrondis aux chiffres significatifs requis pour la précision du résultat et sont exprimés en multiples de 103. Si le nombre est inférieur à un, il est arrondi aux chiffres significatifs requis et est exprimé en multiples de 10-3.
Selon la règle, lorsqu’un nombre se termine par un chiffre supérieur à cinq, il est arrondi à la hausse, et lorsque le chiffre est inférieur à cinq, le nombre reste le même, jusqu’aux chiffres significatifs.
Lorsque le nombre se termine par le chiffre cinq, il n’est arrondi à la hausse que si le nombre précédent est impair, et s’il est pair, il reste le même jusqu’aux chiffres significatifs.

Dans les applications d'ingénierie, la représentation de la valeur numérique est essentielle. Présenter ou rapporter la réponse fait partie intégrante des pratiques d'ingénierie. Les calculs numériques sont effectués à l'aide de calculatrices portables ou d'ordinateurs, car les réponses numériquement précises sont toujours préférées. La solution à un problème est obtenue en utilisant différentes méthodes. Alors que la résolution manuelle de symboles algébriques est l'une des méthodes les plus courantes, la méthode graphique est souvent préférée. Les ordinateurs sont utiles lorsque de nombreuses équations doivent être résolues. Une équation homogène dimensionnellement doit être utilisée lors de l'exécution de ces calculs. Les unités utilisées dans de telles équations doivent faire partie du même système. La précision d'un problème numérique dépend de plusieurs facteurs. Le nombre de chiffres significatifs contenus dans une valeur numérique est l'un de ces facteurs. Étant donné qu'un nombre entier se terminant par des zéros entraîne toujours une confusion, le résultat est rapporté en utilisant la notation d'ingénierie. Si le nombre commence par des zéros, de tels nombres sont exprimés comme 4,56 (10-3) ou 456(10-6). Les nombres trop grands et trop petits sont arrondis au nombre de chiffres significatifs requis. Cependant, lors de l'arrondi d'un nombre, la précision du résultat final doit rester la même. Presque toutes les calculatrices sont conçues pour arrondir la valeur. Lors de l'exécution des différentes étapes, il vaut mieux ne pas arrondir la réponse jusqu'à la dernière étape. Seule la réponse ou le résultat doit être arrondi en fonction de la précision requise. Numerical calculations in engineering depend on clear values, correct units, and careful rounding. Presenting the answer is an important part of engineering practice, so numerically accurate results are preferred. Handheld calculators and computers are often used because they help produce accurate answers.

Problems can be solved in several ways. Solving algebraic symbols by hand is common, and the graphical method is often preferred in some cases. Computers are especially useful when many equations must be solved. In every case, the equation should be dimensionally homogeneous, which means the units must belong to the same system.

The accuracy of a numerical result depends on several factors, including the number of significant figures. Significant figures are the digits in a value that carry meaning, and they matter when reporting answers. Whole numbers that end in zeroes can be confusing, so results are often written in engineering notation. This format uses prefixes and expresses values as multiples of 10^3.

Engineering notation also helps show very large or very small numbers clearly. For example, 34,600 can be written as 34.6(10^3) when three significant figures are needed. If five significant figures are needed, the same number can be written as 0.34600(10^6). In decimals, leading zeroes are not significant, so 0.00456 has three significant figures. Values with leading zeroes can also be written as 4.56(10^-3) or 456(10^-6).

Rounding must be done carefully so the final accuracy is preserved. Very large or very small numbers are rounded to the required number of significant figures. During multi-step work, it is better not to round until the last step. Only the final answer should be rounded to the required accuracy, and in many engineering problems, three significant figures are used.
