Systematic Error: Methodological and Sampling Errors

Les erreurs systématiques, selon leur source, sont de quatre types : erreurs d’échantillonnage, erreurs instrumentales, erreurs de méthode et erreurs personnelles.
Les erreurs d’échantillonnage se produisent en raison de méthodes d’échantillonnage inadéquates, ce qui entraîne des variations entre les échantillons répétés. Une stratégie d’échantillonnage affinée minimise ces erreurs.
Les erreurs instrumentales résultent d’instruments défectueux ou d’étalonnages défectueux Ces erreurs peuvent être éliminées par un étalonnage périodique.
Les erreurs de méthode proviennent de limitations de la méthode analytique, d’un comportement non idéal des réactifs et d’hypothèses invalides. Ces erreurs peuvent être atténuées à l’aide de matériaux de référence standard, d’essais à blanc ou d’une analyse indépendante parallèle.
De plus, les erreurs personnelles sont le résultat de la négligence et des capacités limitées des analystes. Ceux-ci peuvent être minimisés grâce à un travail de laboratoire systématique et attentif et à des procédures automatisées.
Si l’amplitude de l’erreur absolue est indépendante de la taille de l’échantillon, il s’agit d’une erreur constante. Cependant, si elle varie systématiquement avec la taille de l’échantillon, il s’agit d’une erreur proportionnée.

Ces erreurs peuvent être minimisées en affinant la stratégie d’échantillonnage. Des instruments défectueux ou des étalonnages erronés sont à l'origine d'erreurs instrumentales. Un étalonnage périodique des instruments est essentiel pour éliminer de telles erreurs.

Des erreurs de méthode se produisent en raison des limites d'une méthode analytique, du comportement non idéal des réactifs utilisés et des hypothèses invalides formulées lors de la configuration de la mesure. Ces erreurs peuvent être atténuées à l’aide de matériaux de référence standards ou d’analyses indépendantes de la méthode existante mais réalisées en parallèle.

Les erreurs personnelles surviennent en raison de la négligence ou du manque de compétences des analystes. Une bonne organisation du matériel et des équipements, la standardisation des protocoles et l’attention portée aux détails peuvent contribuer à minimiser ces erreurs. Des procédures automatisées peuvent également être instituées pour minimiser la manipulation humaine, réduisant ainsi les erreurs personnelles.

Les erreurs systématiques peuvent également être des erreurs constantes ou des erreurs proportionnelles. L’ampleur absolue des erreurs constantes reste la même quelle que soit la taille de l’échantillon. Ces erreurs peuvent être minimisées en augmentant la taille de l’échantillon, car la contribution de l’erreur constante par rapport à une taille d’échantillon plus grande est moins significative que la même erreur constante par rapport à une taille d’échantillon plus petite. D'un autre côté, l'ampleur d'une erreur proportionnelle augmentera avec l'augmentation de la taille de l'échantillon, d'où le terme « proportionnel ». Augmenter la taille de l’échantillon ne contribuera pas à réduire ces types d’erreurs. L’utilisation d’instruments de haute précision est un moyen de réduire les erreurs proportionnelles.

Systematic errors are bias in measurement, and their sources can often be identified and reduced. In this topic, the main categories are sampling, instrumental, methodological, and personal errors. Each one comes from a different part of the experiment, so each one needs a different fix.

Sampling errors happen when the sampling method is poor or when the wrong population is chosen. These errors can be reduced by improving the sampling strategy. Better sample selection helps the results represent the target group more accurately.

Instrumental errors come from defective instruments or faulty calibration. Periodic calibration is important because it helps remove these errors. Method errors come from limits in the analytical method, non-ideal reagents, and invalid assumptions made during measurement. They can be reduced by using standard reference materials or by running a parallel analysis that does not depend on the same method.

Personal errors come from carelessness or a lack of skill by the analyst. These errors can be minimized by organizing materials and equipment well, standardizing protocols, and paying close attention to detail. Automated procedures can also reduce human handling and lower personal error.

Systematic errors can also be constant errors or proportional errors. A constant error keeps the same absolute size no matter how large the sample is. Increasing the sample size can reduce its effect because the error matters less in a larger sample. A proportional error grows as the sample size increases, so a larger sample does not help. High-precision instruments are one way to reduce proportional errors.
