Apparent Weight

Prenons l’exemple d’un ascenseur au repos, ayant une boîte sur une balance. La force gravitationnelle sur la boîte est égale à la force normale exercée par l’échelle sur la boîte, de sorte que l’intensité de la force nette sur la boîte est nulle. La balance indique l’intensité de la force normale, qui est le poids réel de la boîte.
Si l’ascenseur se déplace vers le haut avec une accélération constante, l’intensité nette de la force sur la boîte est égale à la différence entre la force normale et la force gravitationnelle sur celle-ci. La balance indique que le poids apparent est supérieur au poids réel de la boîte.
Lorsque l’ascenseur accélère vers le bas, conventionnellement, l’accélération devient négative. Le poids apparent est maintenant inférieur au poids réel de la boîte.
Maintenant, si le câble de l'ascenseur se rompt, la boîte avec l'échelle planera momentanément mais finira par accélérer vers le bas en raison de la gravité, subissant une chute libre.
La balance indique zéro et la boîte semble en apesanteur. Ce phénomène est appelé apesanteur apparente.

poids apparent

Le poids réel est la mesure de la force gravitationnelle agissant sur un objet. Cependant, si l'objet accélère, son poids mesuré est différent de son poids réel. Des observations similaires peuvent être faites lorsque l'objet est immergé dans l'eau. Le poids d'un objet dans l'eau est son poids apparent, qui est égal à la différence entre son poids réel et les forces de flottabilité.

Considérations d'une personne debout sur une balance de salle de bain à l'intérieur d'un ascenseur. Si la balance est précise au repos, sa lecture correspond à la magnitude de la force que la personne exerce vers le bas sur elle. Les seules forces agissant sur la personne sont son poids et la force normale ascendante de la balance. Au repos, la force nette sur la personne est nulle. Selon la troisième loi de Newton, le poids et la force normale sont égaux en magnitude et opposés en direction, donc la force normale est égale au poids réel de la personne. La balance de salle de bain lit la force normale exercée par la balance sur la personne.

Si l'ascenseur accélère vers le haut avec une accélération constante, le poids apparent est supérieur au poids réel car la force nette agissant sur lui est supérieure à zéro. Cependant, si l'ascenseur décélère, le poids apparent est inférieur au poids réel de l'objet car la force nette agissant sur l'objet est négative. Si l'ascenseur est en chute libre, la personne se sent sans poids car elle et l'ascenseur tombent sous l'effet de l'accélération gravitationnelle. Ce phénomène s'appelle le poids apparent.

Le "poids apparent" ressenti par les personnes dans un satellite en orbite près de la Terre est le même poids apparent ressenti dans un ascenseur en chute libre. La force de gravité fait en sorte que le satellite "tombe" hors de sa trajectoire rectiligne naturelle. Ainsi, bien que la force de gravité agisse sur les objets à l'intérieur du satellite, les objets ressentent un poids apparent car ils et le satellite accélèrent ensemble comme en chute libre.

Scale readings can change when an object is moving or submerged in water. The force we call true weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. When motion or fluid forces are present, the reading can differ from that true weight. In water, this changed reading is called apparent weight, and it equals true weight minus the buoyant force.

A bathroom scale in an elevator shows how this works. At rest, the scale reads the force the person pushes downward on it. The only forces on the person are weight and the upward normal force from the scale. Because the net force is zero, the normal force matches the person’s true weight.

If the elevator accelerates upward with constant acceleration, the apparent weight becomes greater than the true weight. The net force on the person is then greater than zero. If the elevator decelerates, the apparent weight becomes less than the true weight. In that case, the net force on the person is negative.

If the elevator is in free fall, the person feels weightless. This is called apparent weightlessness. The same effect happens for people in a satellite orbit close to Earth. Gravity still acts on the satellite and on the objects inside it. But both the satellite and the objects are falling together, so they experience apparent weightlessness just like a free-falling elevator.
