Qualitative Analysis

L’analyse qualitative est l’identification d’éléments, d’ions ou de composés dans un échantillon inconnu. Il s’agit du premier des trois types d’analyse basés sur la hiérarchie de l’objectif et le type d’information requise.
L’analyse qualitative est réalisée à l’aide de méthodes classiques et instrumentales.
Les méthodes classiques sont basées sur le résultat perceptible de réactions chimiques sélectives ou spécifiques identifiables par les sens humains.
Les réactions sélectives ont un certain degré de préférence envers l’analyte par rapport aux autres composants de l’échantillon. En revanche, des réactions spécifiques ne se produisent qu’avec l’analyte.
Le préconditionnement d’échantillons, comme la précipitation ou l’extraction, améliore la sélectivité d’une réaction envers l’analyte.
En comparaison, les méthodes instrumentales mesurent une propriété physique distincte de l’analyte. Par exemple, les pics individuels d’un spectre infrarouge indiquent un groupe fonctionnel spécifique dans l’échantillon.

Il existe deux principales approches de l'analyse qualitative: les méthodes classiques et instrumentales. Les méthodes classiques s'appuient sur les résultats observables de réactions chimiques spécifiques, qui peuvent être identifiées par les sens humains (c'est-à-dire la vue ou l'odorat). Ces réactions sont soit sélectives, ce qui signifie qu'elles favorisent l'analyte cible par rapport aux autres composants, soit spécifiques, indiquant qu'elles ne réagissent qu'avec l'analyte. Des étapes de préconditionnement telles que la précipitation ou l'extraction peuvent être utilisées pour améliorer la sélectivité de ces réactions. Qualitative analysis identifies the elements, ions, or compounds in an unknown sample. It is the first step in the hierarchy of analytical goals. That makes it the starting point for scientific study before quantitative analysis or other forms of analysis.

Two main approaches are used in qualitative analysis: classical methods and instrumental methods. Classical methods depend on the visible or sensory result of a chemical reaction, such as a color change, a precipitate, or even a smell. These reactions may be selective, meaning they favor the target analyte, or specific, meaning they react only with that analyte.

Classical analysis may also use preconditioning steps to improve selectivity. Precipitation and extraction are two examples of these steps. In a precipitation reaction, a reagent is added to form a solid precipitate. The precipitate can then be filtered and analyzed further.

Instrumental methods identify a sample by measuring its unique physical properties. Infrared, or IR, spectroscopy is one example. In IR spectroscopy, distinct peaks in a spectrum match specific functional groups, which helps identify compounds in the sample. Together, classical and instrumental methods provide the basic tools used to identify unknown components in scientific samples.
