Une solution contenant tous les composants de l’analyse, à l’exception de l’analyte, est appelée solution à blanc.
Dans des conditions identiques, la solution à blanc est mesurée à l’aide du même instrument que la solution étalon et l’échantillon d’essai. Cette détermination à blanc révèle toute erreur systématique et erreurs causées par les impuretés dans les réactifs et les solvants.
La valeur du blanc est soustraite de toutes les valeurs de mesure ultérieures, telles que celles des solutions étalons ou de l'échantillon d'essai, afin d'éliminer les erreurs. Alors que les valeurs de la solution à blanc et de la solution étalon génèrent la courbe d’étalonnage, la valeur obtenue à partir de l’échantillon d’essai est utilisée pour déterminer avec précision la concentration inconnue de l’analyte.
Dans l’analyse titrimétrique, des solutions à blanc sont utilisées pour éliminer les erreurs causées par les impuretés dans le titrant.

Ainsi, les solutions vierges aident à identifier et à corriger la contamination pendant la préparation ou l'analyse de l'échantillon.

De plus, la solution vierge est parfois utilisée pour étalonner des instruments ou des systèmes de mesure. Blank solutions are used in analytical testing to show the background signal before a sample is measured. A blank solution does not contain the analyte, which is the substance of interest being tested or measured. It is usually made with the same reagents and procedure as the sample solution, but without the analyte.

The main purpose of a blank solution is to control for background interference and contamination. Reagents, solvents, or lab equipment can sometimes create a detectable signal on their own. By measuring the blank first, scientists can identify that background signal and subtract it from the sample result.

Blank solutions also help detect contamination from the lab environment. Dust, airborne particles, or residues from earlier experiments can affect the analysis. In some cases, a blank solution is also used to calibrate instruments or measurement systems. It establishes a baseline so later sample measurements can be standardized and more accurate.
