Il existe trois types de matériaux d’échantillonnage : solide, liquide et gazeux. Les échantillons solides peuvent inclure des sédiments accumulés dans des plans d’eau, des roches, des métaux et des tissus biologiques.
Les sédiments dans les plans d’eau sont extraits à l’aide d’un échantillonneur instantané ou d’un carotier à piston. Par exemple, après avoir descendu un échantillonneur instantané dans le lit d’une rivière, l’échantillonneur se referme autour du sédiment pour extraire un échantillon. 
Quelques exemples d’échantillons liquides sont l’eau, le sang, l’urine et les solvants. Un volume précis de liquide homogène est collecté à l’aide d’une pipette ou d’une seringue.
Des échantillons peuvent être prélevés à partir de liquides hétérogènes tels que les effluents industriels à l’aide d’un échantillonneur automatisé, qui les collecte à intervalles réguliers.
Des échantillons gazeux peuvent être prélevés dans l’air atmosphérique, les bouches d’évacuation et les cheminées industrielles pour analyse.
Les réactifs solides, tels que le charbon actif, sont largement utilisés pour adsorber sélectivement les composés cibles du flux gazeux. Le composé cible est ensuite extrait par des techniques de désorption et analysé via des méthodes analytiques appropriées.

Les échantillons solides comprennent une variété de substances, telles que les sédiments des plans d'eau, le sol, les métaux et les tissus biologiques. Deux méthodes standard pour extraire les sédiments des plans d'eau sont l'échantillonnage instantané et le carottage par piston. L'échantillonnage instantané consiste à utiliser un dispositif pour collecter un échantillon de sédiment discret au fond d'un plan d'eau avec un minimum de perturbations. Les échantillons instantanés ne représentent pas toujours la zone entière en raison de la variabilité spatiale (variation selon les emplacements). Le carottage par piston est une méthode utilisée pour récupérer une colonne continue de sédiments qui permet d’analyser les changements au fil du temps dans les couches de sédiments.

Un échantillon peut être prélevé à l'aide d'une bouteille d'échantillonnage propre pour les plans d'eau de surface comme les lacs ou les rivières. La bouteille doit être immergée à la profondeur souhaitée pour minimiser la contamination. L'échantillonnage sanguin utilise généralement une seringue insérée dans une veine pour prélever un volume de sang spécifique. L'échantillon est ensuite transféré dans les récipients appropriés pour une analyse plus approfondie. L'échantillonnage d'urine consiste à utiliser un récipient propre pour collecter un volume d'urine spécifique. L'échantillon d'urine est ensuite transféré dans des récipients adaptés pour analyse. Les effluents industriels sont souvent des liquides hétérogènes contenant divers produits chimiques et polluants. L'échantillonnage de ces effluents nécessite généralement un échantillonneur automatique, un dispositif conçu pour collecter des échantillons à intervalles réguliers. Cet appareil est programmé pour collecter des échantillons représentatifs à des intervalles de temps prédéterminés, analysant de manière exhaustive la composition de l'effluent.

Pour l'échantillonnage de gaz, des sorbants solides comme le charbon actif sont couramment utilisés pour adsorber sélectivement les composés cibles d'un flux de gaz. Les composés adsorbés sur le charbon actif peuvent être extraits par diverses méthodes de désorption, telles que le chauffage et l'extraction par solvant. En fonction du composé spécifique et des informations nécessaires, les composés extraits peuvent ensuite être analysés à l'aide de techniques de caractérisation telles que la spectroscopie ou la chromatographie.

Sampling materials are grouped as solid, liquid, or gas. The type of sample helps decide the right collection method. Solid samples can include sediments from water bodies, soil, metals, and biological tissues.

Sediment sampling from water bodies can be done in two common ways. Grab sampling uses a device to collect a discrete sample from the bottom with minimal disturbance. These samples may not show the full area because conditions can vary from place to place. Piston coring collects a continuous column of sediment. This lets scientists study changes over time in the sediment layers.

Liquid samples are often collected with clean tools to reduce contamination. A sampling bottle can be used for surface water in lakes or rivers. The bottle is submerged to the desired depth before the sample is taken. Blood is usually sampled with a syringe placed into a vein to draw a set volume, then the blood is moved into the correct container for analysis. Urine sampling uses a clean container to collect a measured amount of urine before transfer to suitable containers.

Industrial effluents are often mixed liquids that contain many chemicals and pollutants. They are commonly sampled with an automatic sampler. This device collects samples at set time intervals so the sample better reflects the effluent composition. Gas sampling often uses solid sorbents such as activated carbon. The target compounds are adsorbed onto the carbon, then removed by desorption methods such as heating or solvent extraction. The extracted compounds can then be studied with techniques like spectroscopy or chromatography.
