Les méthodes d’échantillonnage courantes sont l’échantillonnage aléatoire, l’échantillonnage discrétionnaire, l’échantillonnage systématique, l’échantillonnage stratifié et l’échantillonnage en grappes. 
Dans l’échantillonnage aléatoire, un échantillon est obtenu en sélectionnant au hasard des individus d’une population sans préférence, chacun ayant une chance égale d’être sélectionné.
Au contraire, l’échantillonnage discrétionnaire est un processus non aléatoire. Ici, un échantillon est sélectionné sur la base des informations disponibles sur la population.
L’échantillonnage systématique est une méthode qui consiste à sélectionner des individus dans une population à intervalles réguliers. Par exemple, pour générer une taille d’échantillon de 4 individus à partir d’une population de 12 personnes, le point de départ est choisi au hasard entre un et l’intervalle d’échantillonnage. Ainsi, chaque 3ème membre est sélectionné pour faire un échantillon de 4 individus.
Dans l’échantillonnage stratifié, la population est divisée en sous-groupes ou strates en fonction des caractéristiques partagées par les individus. Les individus sont ensuite sélectionnés proportionnellement dans chaque sous-groupe pour composer un échantillon final aux fins d’analyse.
De même, l’échantillonnage en grappes consiste également à diviser la population en sous-groupes ou en grappes. Quelques grappes sont ensuite sélectionnées au hasard pour l’évaluation.

Par exemple, lors de l'analyse des propriétés d'une feuille de polymère, l'échantillonnage aléatoire peut être utilisé en divisant la feuille en sections égales de 1 cm x 1 cm, puis en utilisant une table de nombres aléatoires pour sélectionner 10 sections au hasard pour l'analyse. Cela garantit la sélection d'échantillons impartiaux sur toute la feuille. L'échantillonnage aléatoire minimise les biais et permet de produire un échantillon qui représente avec précision l'ensemble de la population.

L'échantillonnage discrétionnaire, également appelé échantillonnage intentionnel ou sélectif, est une méthode non probabiliste qui s'appuie sur le jugement ou l'expertise du chercheur pour choisir les individus ou les échantillons jugés les plus adaptés à l'étude. Par exemple, supposons qu'un chercheur étudie la bioaccumulation de biphényles polychlorés (BPC) dans les poissons. Dans ce cas, il peut échantillonner de manière sélective uniquement les poissons qui répondent à des critères spécifiques, comme être plus petit ou semble en mauvaise santé. Cette méthode est souvent utilisée lorsque les organismes de réglementation exigent des critères spécifiques pour définir l'échantillon collecté.

L'échantillonnage systématique consiste à sélectionner chaque nième individu d'une population après avoir choisi au hasard un point de départ. Par exemple, dans les études environnementales, l'échantillonnage systématique peut être utilisé pour collecter des échantillons d'un lac en le divisant en une grille et en prélevant des échantillons à intervalles réguliers dans chaque section, garantissant une couverture spatiale sur l'ensemble du lac. Quelques grappes sont choisies au hasard et toutes les personnes au sein des grappes sélectionnées sont échantillonnées. Cette méthode est couramment utilisée dans les études à grande échelle où les contraintes logistiques limitent le nombre de sites d'échantillonnage. Par exemple, une étude sur la contamination des eaux souterraines peut diviser une région en grappes en fonction des limites géographiques, puis sélectionner au hasard quelques grappes (régions) pour échantillonner tous les puits disponibles.

Sampling is a key step in analytical chemistry. It helps researchers collect data that represents a larger population. The main sampling methods in this topic are random, judgmental, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling.

Random sampling gives each member of the population an equal chance of being chosen. Researchers often use a random number generator or a lottery-style method. For example, a polymer sheet can be divided into 1 cm x 1 cm sections, and 10 sections can be selected at random for analysis. This helps reduce bias and supports a sample that reflects the whole population.

Judgmental sampling is also called purposive or selective sampling. It depends on the researcher&amp;#39;s judgment to choose samples that fit the study. For example, a researcher studying bioaccumulation of PCBs in fish may choose smaller fish or fish that appear unhealthy. Regulatory agencies may also require specific criteria for this kind of sampling.

Systematic sampling uses a random starting point and then selects every n th individual. It can also be used in environmental studies with a grid, such as sampling a lake at regular intervals. This method helps provide spatial coverage across the lake. It is useful when studying spatial trends, such as oxygen distribution in water.

Stratified sampling divides a population into strata, or subgroups, based on a feature linked to the study. Samples are then randomly taken from each stratum in proportion to its size in the population. For example, particulate matter in urban air can be grouped by particle size, such as fine and coarse particles. This approach can improve precision within each subgroup and reduce sampling error.

Cluster sampling divides the population into clusters, or groups that can act as mini-representations of the whole. A few clusters are randomly selected, and everyone within those clusters is sampled. This method is often used in large studies when the number of sampling sites must be limited. For example, a groundwater contamination study may divide a region into geographic clusters and then sample all available wells in the chosen clusters.
