La spectroscopie par réflexion interne, ou spectroscopie infrarouge à réflectance totale atténuée, est une technique analytique permettant d’obtenir des spectres infrarouges d’échantillons difficiles tels que des solides à solubilité limitée, des films, des fils, des pâtes et des adhésifs.
L’ATR est basé sur la réflexion interne totale, qui se produit lorsqu’un faisceau de lumière passe d’un cristal, représentant un milieu très dense, à un milieu d’échantillon moins dense à un angle supérieur à l’angle critique.
Au cours de ce processus, le faisceau pénètre à une courte distance au-delà du cristal dans l’échantillon, générant une onde évanescente. L’échantillon absorbe ce rayonnement à courte durée de vie à des longueurs d’onde spécifiques, ce qui entraîne une atténuation du faisceau, connue sous le nom de réflectance totale atténuée.
La profondeur de pénétration dépend de facteurs tels que la longueur d’onde du faisceau, les indices de réfraction du cristal et de l’échantillon, et l’angle du faisceau par rapport à l’interface.
Le spectre ATR comprend les mêmes bandes qu’un spectre d’absorption conventionnel, mais diffère par ses intensités relatives.

Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) Infrared Spectroscopy: Overview

La spectroscopie infrarouge à réflectance totale atténuée (ATR) est une technique d'analyse puissante utilisée pour étudier la composition des matériaux. Elle est largement utilisée en chimie, en science des matériaux, en criminalistique et dans d'autres domaines où la caractérisation des échantillons est nécessaire. L'ATR présente plusieurs avantages par rapport à la spectroscopie IR à transmission traditionnelle, notamment la nécessité de peu ou pas de préparation d'échantillon et la capacité d'analyser une large gamme d'échantillons.

Le processus ATR commence par diriger un faisceau de rayonnement IR sur un cristal de diamant ou de germanium. L'indice de réfraction élevé conduit à la réflexion interne totale du faisceau dans le cristal ATR. Lorsque le faisceau atteint l'interface entre le cristal à indice de réfraction élevé et l'échantillon à indice de réfraction inférieur, une onde évanescente est générée qui s'étend au-delà de la surface du cristal dans l'échantillon. Lorsque l'onde évanescente interagit avec l'échantillon, une partie de l'énergie de l'onde est absorbée.

La profondeur à laquelle cette onde pénètre dans l'échantillon dépend de la longueur d'onde de la lumière incidente, de l'angle d'incidence et des indices de réfraction du cristal et de l'échantillon. L'énergie absorbée correspond aux fréquences vibratoires des molécules de l'échantillon, créant un spectre d'absorption unique. Chaque molécule possède une combinaison unique de vibrations de liaison et absorbe le rayonnement IR à des longueurs d'onde spécifiques. La comparaison du spectre d'absorption de l'échantillon avec des spectres connus permet d'identifier la composition moléculaire de l'échantillon.

ATR infrared spectroscopy is a method for identifying the composition of materials. It is used in chemistry, materials science, forensic science, and other areas where sample characterization is needed. The technique is useful because it usually needs little to no sample preparation and can be applied to many kinds of samples.

The process starts when infrared, or IR, radiation is directed onto a diamond or germanium crystal. Because this crystal has a high refractive index, the IR beam undergoes total internal reflection inside the ATR crystal. At the surface where the crystal meets the sample, an evanescent wave is formed. This wave extends just beyond the crystal surface and into the sample.

As the evanescent wave interacts with the sample, some of its energy is absorbed. The depth of this penetration depends on the wavelength of the incoming light, the angle of incidence, and the refractive indices of the crystal and sample. The absorbed energy matches the vibrational frequencies of molecules in the sample. This creates a unique absorption spectrum.

Each molecule has its own set of bond vibrations and absorbs IR light at specific wavelengths. By comparing the sample’s absorption spectrum with known spectra, scientists can help identify its molecular composition.
