Initialement, la jonction base-émetteur et la jonction collecteur-émetteur sont polarisées en sens inverse.
Ici, le courant circulant dans la base est nul et le courant traversant la jonction collecteur-émetteur est dû à des porteurs minoritaires. Il s’agit d’un état éteint du transistor.
Lorsque la jonction de l’émetteur de base devient polarisée vers l’avant, le courant de base augmente, augmentant ainsi le courant du collecteur. Ici, le transistor s’allume. Ainsi, le transistor fonctionne comme un interrupteur idéal.
Le comportement transitoire du courant du collecteur dépend de la variation de la charge totale de porteuse minoritaire excédentaire stockée dans la base.
Lorsque cette charge est inférieure à QS, la charge de base à une tension de base de collecteur nulle, le transistor fonctionne en mode actif.
Pendant la phase d’allumage, si la charge de base dépasse QS, l’appareil passe en mode de saturation.
Pendant la phase d’arrêt, le courant du collecteur reste presque constant jusqu’à ce que la charge stockée soit réduite à QS.
Une fois que la charge stockée est égale à QS, l’appareil revient en mode actif. Par la suite, le courant du collecteur diminue progressivement vers zéro.

Le comportement du courant du collecteur pendant ces transitions est crucial pour une commutation efficace. Cela dépend de la variation de la charge totale des porteurs minoritaires en excès stockée dans la région de base du transistor.
Pendant la phase de mise sous tension, si la charge de base dépasse un certain seuil (noté Q_S), le BJT entre en mode saturation. Switching of BJT

Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) can work as digital on-off switches in electronic circuits. In this mode, the transistor moves between cut-off and saturation. These two states match the off and on positions of an ideal switch.

In cut-off mode, both the emitter-base junction and the collector-base junction are reverse-biased. This blocks current flow through the transistor and keeps it off. Circuits use this state when no signal transmission is needed, which helps maintain a low-power condition.

In saturation mode, both junctions are forward-biased. This allows maximum current to flow from the collector to the emitter. The BJT then behaves like a closed switch and lets the signal pass through the circuit.

The switch from off to on begins with a sudden change in emitter-base voltage. A positive input current pulse usually triggers this change. The collector current during switching depends on the total excess minority carrier charge stored in the base region.

During turn-on, the base charge can rise above a threshold called QS. When that happens, the BJT enters saturation. During turn-off, the collector current stays nearly constant until the stored charge falls back to QS. The transistor then returns to active mode and finally drops toward zero as it reaches cut-off.
