La réponse transitoire diminue jusqu’à zéro au fil du temps. La réponse à l’état d’équilibre persiste après que la réponse transitoire s’est estompée.
La stabilité d'un tel système est directement liée aux racines de l'équation caractéristique du système ou à ses pôles.
Un système maintenant une sortie bornée pour une entrée bornée, avec les racines de l’équation caractéristique dans le demi-plan s gauche, est stable. Cependant, si une racine se trouve dans le demi-plan S droit, il devient instable.
La stabilité absolue confirme la stabilité du système, tandis que la stabilité relative mesure son degré.
Considérons un pendule. Lorsqu’il n’est pas perturbé, il repose dans un état d’équilibre statique, maintenant sa stabilité pour les mouvements mineurs autour de l’équilibre.
Lorsque des forces externes ou de frottement sont ajoutées, la réponse transitoire du système diminue progressivement au fil du temps en raison de l’influence de l’amortissement. Le pendule réalise un mouvement stable autour de la position d’équilibre.
En revanche, un pendule inversé est intrinsèquement instable et nécessite un contrôle actif pour l’empêcher de basculer. Lorsqu’il est perturbé par une force externe, il ne revient pas à sa position initiale, illustrant une instabilité.

Un système est stable s'il produit une sortie limitée pour une entrée limitée, ce qui se produit lorsque toutes les racines de l'équation caractéristique sont situées dans la moitié gauche du plan complexe. Si une racine se trouve dans la moitié droite du plan, le système devient instable. La stabilité absolue indique si un système est stable ou instable, tandis que la stabilité relative mesure le degré de stabilité.

Un exemple illustratif de ces concepts est le pendule. Lorsqu'il n'est pas perturbé, un pendule repose dans un état d'équilibre statique et présente une stabilité pour de petits mouvements autour de cette position d'équilibre. Cette stabilité est maintenue lorsque le pendule est déplacé et peut osciller. Dans ce cas, des forces externes ou de frottement sont présentes. Ces forces introduisent un amortissement, ce qui entraîne une diminution progressive de la réponse transitoire du système au fil du temps. Finalement, le pendule atteint un mouvement stable autour de la position d'équilibre, démontrant les caractéristiques d'un système stable.

En revanche, si le pendule est déplacé d'une position d'équilibre instable, il commence à osciller avec une réponse temporelle exponentielle. Ce mouvement sans restriction est synonyme d'instabilité, car le système ne parvient pas à revenir à l'équilibre et l'amplitude des oscillations continue d'augmenter.

Il est essentiel de comprendre la distinction entre les réponses transitoires et stables, ainsi que les conditions de stabilité, pour analyser et concevoir des systèmes LTI. En s'assurant que tous les pôles du système se trouvent dans la moitié gauche du plan complexe, les ingénieurs peuvent garantir la stabilité et prédire le comportement du système en réponse à diverses entrées, ce qui conduit à des performances système plus robustes et plus fiables.

Stability

System response and stability describe how a linear time-invariant (LTI) system reacts to a change in input. The time response has two parts: transient response and steady-state response. The transient response is the first reaction and it fades to zero over time. The steady-state response remains after the transient effects have disappeared.

An LTI system is stable when it gives a bounded output for a bounded input. For these systems, stability depends on the roots of the characteristic equation, also called poles. The system is stable when all poles are in the left-half of the s-plane. If any pole is in the right-half of the s-plane, the system becomes unstable.

Engineers also use the terms absolute stability and relative stability. Absolute stability tells whether a system is stable or unstable. Relative stability describes how stable the system is. These ideas help show not only if a system will settle, but also how strongly it resists unwanted growth.

A pendulum gives a clear example of these ideas. When it is undisturbed, it rests in static equilibrium and is stable for small motions around that position. If it is displaced and allowed to swing, external or frictional forces add damping. The transient response then decreases over time, and the pendulum reaches stable motion around equilibrium.

A pendulum can also show instability. If it is displaced from an unstable equilibrium position, it begins to swing with exponential growth in its time response. The motion does not return to equilibrium. Instead, the amplitude of the oscillations keeps increasing, which shows an unstable system.

Knowing the difference between transient and steady-state responses is important for analyzing and designing LTI systems. Engineers use the location of the poles in the left-half s-plane to check stability and predict how a system will react to different inputs. This leads to more reliable system performance.
