RC circuits and other first-order systems show how a simple input can shape system response over time. These systems are often studied through their transfer function, which links the input and output under zero initial conditions. That relationship makes it easier to analyze how the system behaves when the input changes.

A unit-step input gives a response that starts at zero and rises toward one. The Laplace transform of the step input is applied to the transfer function, then the result is expanded into partial fractions and converted back with the inverse Laplace transform. The response reaches 63.2% of its final value at one time constant, τ. That point shows how quickly the system begins to react.

A unit-ramp input gives another useful test of system tracking. The same Laplace-based method is used to find the output and the error signal. As time goes to infinity, the error settles near the time constant, τ. Smaller time constants therefore mean smaller steady-state error and better ramp tracking.

A unit-impulse input shows the system’s reaction to a sudden change. Its response is found directly with the Laplace transform method and reveals the transient behavior of the system.
