Envisagez une fonction de transfert en boucle fermée. Pour créer une table Routh, les lignes sont étiquetées avec les puissances s s à partir de la plus élevée.
La première rangée est remplie horizontalement avec tous les autres coefficients du dénominateur, en commençant par la puissance la plus élevée. La deuxième rangée suit la puissance la plus élevée suivante et répertorie les coefficients sautés.
Les entrées suivantes sont calculées à partir des déterminants négatifs des rangées précédentes, divisés par l’entrée directement au-dessus de la première colonne.
Pour un système, les lignes de la table Routh sont calculées. La constante positive met à l’échelle les rangées indépendamment.
Le critère de Routh-Hurwitz stipule que le nombre de racines du polynôme dans le demi-plan droit est égal au nombre de changements de signe dans la première colonne de la table de Routh, indiquant un système instable.
Un système est stable si tous les pôles se trouvent dans la moitié gauche du plan s, ce qui équivaut à aucun changement de signe dans la première colonne de la table de Routh.

La première ligne est remplie horizontalement avec tous les autres coefficients du polynôme dénominateur, en commençant par la puissance la plus élevée. La deuxième ligne est ensuite remplie avec les coefficients ignorés de la première ligne.

Les entrées suivantes dans la table Routh sont calculées à l'aide des déterminants des lignes précédentes. Plus précisément, chaque entrée est déterminée en prenant le déterminant négatif des deux entrées qui la précèdent et en le divisant par la première entrée de la colonne directement au-dessus. Ce processus se poursuit jusqu'à ce que la totalité de la table soit remplie.

Pour illustrer cela, considérons un système pour lequel les lignes du tableau de Routh sont calculées. Si nécessaire, chaque ligne est mise à l'échelle indépendamment par une constante positive pour simplifier les calculs. Selon le critère de Routh-Hurwitz, le nombre de racines du polynôme dans le plan complexe de la moitié droite correspond au nombre de changements de signe dans la première colonne du tableau de Routh. Ces changements de signe indiquent une instabilité.

À l'inverse, un système est stable si tous les pôles se trouvent dans la moitié gauche du plan complexe, ce qui signifie qu'il n'y a aucun changement de signe dans la première colonne du tableau de Routh. Le fait de s'assurer qu'aucun changement de signe ne se produit confirme que le système restera stable dans diverses conditions de fonctionnement.

Checking stability with the Routh table is a useful part of analyzing a closed-loop transfer function. It helps determine whether a system will remain stable when load conditions change or when a fault occurs. In a power grid, this kind of check is important because instability can lead to blackouts.

The Routh-Hurwitz criterion uses a table built from the denominator polynomial of the transfer function. The rows of the Routh table are labeled by powers of the complex variable s, starting with the highest power. Here, s is a complex number with a real part, σ, and an imaginary part, jω.

The first row is filled with every other coefficient from the denominator polynomial. It starts with the coefficient from the highest power term. The second row then uses the coefficients that were skipped in the first row.

The remaining entries are found from the rows above them. Each new value is calculated from the negative determinant of the two entries above it, divided by the first entry in the column directly above. If needed, each row can be scaled by a positive constant to make the calculations simpler.

Once the table is complete, the first column gives the stability result. The number of sign changes in that column matches the number of roots in the right-half s-plane. Sign changes show instability. If there are no sign changes, then all poles are in the left-half s-plane and the system is stable. This makes the Routh-Hurwitz criterion a systematic way to test whether a system can operate reliably under different conditions.
