Un wythe est un empilement vertical de briques d’une épaisseur d’une unité, tandis qu’un rang est une couche horizontale de briques ou de toute unité de maçonnerie.
Dans les murs construits avec deux wythes, des linteaux, qui sont des briques positionnées perpendiculairement aux murs, sont utilisés pour les interconnecter, renforçant ainsi l’ensemble.
Des attaches ou des renforts métalliques sont utilisés pour interconnecter les briques afin d’assurer la stabilité des murs.
Alternativement, différents modèles de liaison sont utilisés.
Dans un lien commun, une rangée de linteau est posée pour joindre cinq rangées de civières consécutives avec des ferme-briques aux trois quarts dans le coin.
Un bond anglais alterne une rangée de tête suivie d’une course de civière avec une reine plus proche dans chaque rangée pour éviter l’alignement des joints verticaux.
Un lien flamand utilise une tête placée alternativement après les civières dans chaque rangée, ainsi qu’une brique aux trois quarts placée dans le coin.

Brick Masonry

La maçonnerie en briques utilise des briques comme éléments de base et consiste à construire des murs à partir de briques individuelles posées dans du mortier. L'élément de base de la maçonnerie en briques est la paroi, une couche verticale de briques d'une épaisseur d'une brique. Dans une paroi, les briques peuvent être posées en différentes rangées ou motifs, le plus courant étant la rangée de cisaillement, où les briques sont posées avec leur bord long horizontal et leur face parallèle au mur.

Pour les murs plus épais, plusieurs parois sont collées ensemble à l'aide de boutisses (briques posées perpendiculairement au mur) pour améliorer la stabilité. Des attaches ou des renforts métalliques peuvent également relier les parois, stabilisant davantage la structure.

Les motifs de collage dans la maçonnerie améliorent non seulement l'intégrité structurelle, mais ajoutent également une valeur esthétique.La liaison commune, par exemple, comprend une rangée de boutisses tous les cinq ou six rangs de cisaillement. La liaison anglaise alterne entre les rangées de boutisse et de cisaillement, et la liaison flamande alterne les boutisses et les cisaillement dans chaque rangée. Utilisés de manière créative, ces motifs peuvent transformer un simple mur de briques en une œuvre d'art.

Brick masonry is built from individual bricks set in mortar to form walls. A key unit in this system is the wythe, which is a vertical layer of bricks one brick thick. Inside a wythe, bricks can be arranged in different courses, or rows, to build the wall.

The most common course is the stretcher course. In this pattern, each brick lies with its long edge horizontal and its face parallel to the wall. Thicker walls are made by joining multiple wythes together. Builders use headers, which are bricks placed perpendicular to the wall, to bond the layers and improve stability. Metal ties or other reinforcements can also connect wythes for extra support.

Bonding patterns help a brick wall stay strong and can also improve its appearance. The common bond uses a header course every five or six stretcher courses. The English bond alternates header and stretcher courses. The Flemish bond alternates headers and stretchers within the same course. With careful design, these patterns can turn a plain wall into a visual feature.

Bricklaying is a skilled craft that depends on precision and experience. Large projects need uniform work to keep the wall consistent. Modern masonry often uses the running bond because it is economical and attractive. In many cases, metal reinforcement now replaces older bonding methods to improve structural integrity.
