Non-destructive Tests for Concrete Strength

Les tests non destructifs, tels que l’essai au marteau de rebond et l’essai de résistance à la pénétration, peuvent être utilisés pour déterminer la résistance du béton dans une structure existante.
Le marteau à rebond, également connu sous le nom de marteau Schmidt, abrite une masse à ressort.
Le marteau est tenu perpendiculairement à une surface de béton uniforme en appuyant le piston contre celui-ci, ce qui provoque l’extension du ressort, rétractant la masse.
Lorsqu’elle est relâchée, la masse rebondit à partir du piston. L’étendue de ce rebond est ensuite mesurée sur une échelle fixée au marteau et est appelée le nombre de rebond.
Plus la valeur de l’indice de rebond est élevée, plus la surface du béton est dure, ce qui indique une résistance élevée du béton.
Le test de résistance à la pénétration, également connu sous le nom de test de la sonde Windsor, utilise un dispositif semblable à celui d’un pistolet équipé d’un gabarit triangulaire à trois trous.
Le gabarit est placé sur la surface du béton et des sondes sont tirées dans le béton à travers chacun des trois trous à l’aide de l’appareil.

Ce test, qui endommage légèrement la surface en créant de petits trous, est effectué à l'aide d'un dispositif semblable à un pistolet qui libère les sondes à travers trois trous dans un gabarit fixé au béton. La profondeur de pénétration est inversement proportionnelle à la résistance du béton, la pénétration moyenne de trois sondes fournissant la mesure. Cette méthode est considérée comme donnant une estimation plus précise de la résistance du béton que le marteau de rebond, car elle évalue le matériau sous la surface.

Concrete strength can be checked without fully breaking the material. Two common methods are the rebound hammer test, also called the Schmidt hammer test, and the penetration resistance test, also called the Windsor Probe test. Both are used to estimate the strength of existing concrete.

The rebound hammer test measures the hardness of the concrete surface and gives an indirect clue about strength. A spring-driven mass moves inside a tubular housing and strikes a plunger against the concrete. The mass then rebounds, and the travel distance gives a rebound number. That number can be affected by aggregates and voids under the surface, as well as by the angle of the hammer. For that reason, multiple readings are needed for better accuracy.

The penetration resistance test looks at how far probes can enter the concrete. A gunlike device fires probes through three holes in a template attached to the surface. The test makes small holes, so it slightly damages the concrete, but it is still considered a low-damage method. The deeper the probe goes, the lower the concrete strength is likely to be. The average penetration of the three probes is used to measure strength, and this method is considered more accurate than the rebound hammer because it checks material below the surface.
