Ces fissures amplifient les contraintes à l'extrémité de la fissure lorsqu'une charge est appliquée, entraînant une défaillance du matériau sous des charges plus faibles que prévu.
La taille et peut-être la forme d’un échantillon de béton contribuent à sa résistance, et une taille plus grande est plus susceptible d’avoir de nombreuses fissures critiques qui pourraient conduire à une défaillance.
Le béton peut résister à des contraintes lorsqu’il est soumis à une charge externe jusqu’à ce qu’il atteigne un point critique, où il présente une rupture fragile, se fracturant soudainement sans déformation préalable significative.
