Dans le béton entièrement compacté composé d'agrégats sains et propres, la réduction du rapport eau-ciment augmente sa résistance, un concept communément appelé loi d'Abrams.
L'eau dans le béton doit être suffisamment disponible pour l'hydratation, l'absorption par les agrégats et les coffrages, pour contrer l'évaporation et pour répondre aux exigences de maniabilité du mélange.
Étant donné que l’hydratation est le processus pour lequel l’eau est principalement nécessaire, un bon durcissement facilite l’hydratation après la prise finale du ciment.
L'eau ajoutée pour améliorer la maniabilité du béton dépasse la quantité requise pour l'hydratation, ce qui entraîne la formation de vides capillaires. Cela augmente la porosité et la perméabilité du béton tout en diminuant sa résistance et en affectant son aspect de surface.
Dans les utilisations typiques du béton, les rapports eau-ciment varient approximativement entre 0,45 et 0,60 en poids.
Le maintien d’un faible rapport eau-ciment améliore la résistance aux intempéries, assure une forte adhérence entre les couches de béton consécutives, favorise une liaison solide avec l’armature en acier et minimise les changements de volume dus aux fluctuations d’humidité.

 L'excès d'eau utilisé pour faciliter la mise en œuvre entraîne la formation de vides capillaires une fois qu'il s'évapore, ce qui augmente à son tour la porosité et la perméabilité, réduisant ainsi la résistance. Les applications de béton standard maintiennent des rapports eau-ciment de 0,45 à 0,60. Des rapports plus faibles donnent un béton plus dense et plus résistant qui rétrécit moins mais peut nécessiter des additifs pour obtenir la fluidité souhaitée pour la mise en place. Il est essentiel d'utiliser suffisamment d'eau pour assurer la malléabilité du béton sans compromettre ses qualités de durcissement. L'art de la conception du mélange de béton consiste à trouver cet équilibre délicat pour produire un matériau qui répond à des exigences spécifiques d’ouvrabilité tout en conservant son intégrité une fois durci.

Concrete strength depends on the balance between water and cement in the mix. This water-cement ratio is the weight of water compared with the weight of cement. It affects strength, durability, and how well concrete resists environmental stress.

Abrams’ law shows that less water usually makes stronger concrete. Water is still needed for hydration, which is the chemical process that binds water and cement. It also helps the mix stay workable and compactable. Some water must be absorbed into the cement gel so hydration can finish properly.

Too much water can weaken concrete. Extra water makes the mix easier to place, but it leaves capillary voids after it evaporates. These spaces increase porosity and permeability, which lowers strength. Standard concrete often uses a water-cement ratio from 0.45 to 0.60.

Lower ratios make concrete denser, stronger, and less likely to shrink. They may also need additives to make the mix fluid enough for placement. Good concrete mix design finds the right balance between easy workability and strong cured concrete.
