Le rapport granulat-ciment est le poids de l’agrégat total par rapport à celui du ciment dans un mélange de béton.
Un rapport granulat-ciment plus élevé permet d’obtenir un mélange de béton avec moins de ciment, ce qui entraîne une réduction de la maniabilité.
À l’inverse, un mélange de béton avec un rapport agrégat-ciment plus faible, connu sous le nom de mélange riche, contient plus de pâte de ciment, ce qui améliore la maniabilité car la pâte de ciment facilite le mouvement en douceur des particules d’agrégats.
Un rapport granulat-ciment plus élevé présente généralement une résistance accrue lorsque le rapport eau-ciment est constant.
La réduction du rapport granulat-ciment avec un rapport eau-ciment constant augmente la teneur en eau, améliorant ainsi la cohérence. Si la teneur en eau est fixe mais que le rapport granulat-ciment est abaissé, le rapport eau-ciment diminue sans affecter la consistance.
Avec un pourcentage plus faible du volume du béton absorbé par la pâte de ciment, comme on le voit dans les mélanges plus pauvres, la porosité totale du béton diminue, ce qui entraîne une résistance accrue, ce qui exclut les vides à l’intérieur des agrégats eux-mêmes.
Les vides à l’intérieur des agrégats normaux sont généralement insignifiants et n’ont pas d’impact substantiel sur la résistance du béton.
