Dans une étude clinique, les sujets ou les participants sont observés sur un intervalle de temps pour un événement, tel que la mort, qui ne se produit qu’une seule fois.
Maintenant, si un participant survit jusqu’au temps t0, sa probabilité de décès pendant l’intervalle de temps t0 à t1 peut être exprimée comme λ (t1 - t0).
Cette quantité est le taux de risque compté en décès par unité de temps.
Considérons qu’il y a n individus dans l’étude. L’observation du ième individu commence à Bi et s’il meurt, son heure de mort est Di. Soit Ci le temps que les participants sont en vie.
Ainsi, le temps pendant lequel chaque individu est à risque de décès est exprimé comme suit.
Le taux d’aléa est ensuite calculé à l’aide de l’expression suivante.
La quantité L - nombre de décès observés - dans l’équation se rapproche de la distribution de Poisson.
Un taux de risque plus élevé signifie qu’il y a plus de décès avec le temps, tandis qu’un taux de risque plus faible signifie qu’il y a moins de décès avec le temps.

Hazard rate is a statistical measure that describes how event risk changes over time. It is also called the hazard function or failure rate. In survival analysis, it shows the instantaneous rate at which an event occurs, but only after the subject has not had the event yet.

From a probability view, hazard rate gives the chance that a subject will have the event in a very small time interval. That chance is conditional on surviving to the start of that interval. From a frequency view, it can also be treated as the number of events divided by the total time at risk. This makes it a normalized way to measure how often events happen over time.

The hazard rate is a function, so it can change as time passes. In some cases, it increases. In other cases, it decreases or stays constant. Researchers use this pattern to study time-to-event data in survival analysis and reliability engineering.

The cumulative hazard function is found by integrating the hazard rate over time. It shows the total risk that builds up over a period. Clinical trials often compare hazard rates to judge how well treatments work or to see how risk factors affect survival.
