Environmental Applications of Microorganisms

Les micro-organismes sont essentiels au recyclage d’éléments clés comme le carbone, l’azote et le phosphore. Dans le cycle du carbone, les microbes décomposent la matière organique et libèrent du dioxyde de carbone en aérobie. Les organismes photosynthétiques utilisent ensuite ce dioxyde de carbone pour produire des composés organiques. Les bactéries fixatrices d’azote, telles que Rhizobium, forment des relations symbiotiques avec les légumineuses, convertissant l’azote atmosphérique en ammoniac pour enrichir le sol. Les microbes, comme Pseudomonas, renvoient de l’azote dans l’atmosphère par dénitrification. Certaines espèces de Bacillus, comme Bacillus subtilis, solubilisent les phosphates en sécrétant des acides organiques, augmentant ainsi la fertilité du sol. Les microbes jouent également un rôle essentiel dans le traitement des eaux usées en décomposant les polluants organiques lors du traitement secondaire, réduisant ainsi considérablement la demande biologique en oxygène des eaux usées. En biorestauration, des microbes comme Pseudomonas putida et Aspergillus niger dégradent les hydrocarbures et bioaccumulent les métaux lourds, respectivement, transformant les toxines en formes plus sûres. De plus, les microbes soutiennent la production de biocarburants : la levure fermente les sucres en éthanol, tandis que les bactéries anaérobies génèrent du biogaz, principalement composé de méthane.

Microorganisms help keep ecosystems balanced by recycling carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. They also support sewage treatment, bioremediation, and biofuel production. These roles make microbes important in both natural and human-made systems.

In the carbon cycle, microorganisms break down dead organic matter. During aerobic respiration, they release carbon dioxide. Photosynthetic organisms then use that carbon dioxide to make organic compounds, which helps close the carbon loop.

Microbes are also essential in the nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium live with legumes and convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia. That ammonia becomes ammonium ions for plant uptake. Denitrifying bacteria such as Pseudomonas return nitrogen to the atmosphere by reducing nitrates to nitrogen gas.

Some bacteria also help make phosphorus easier for plants to use. Pseudomonas fluorescens can solubilize insoluble phosphate minerals by releasing organic acids. This increases soil phosphorus availability and improves fertility.

Microorganisms play a major role in secondary sewage treatment. They break down organic pollutants in wastewater and lower biological oxygen demand, or BOD. This helps reduce the environmental impact of wastewater before it is discharged.

Microbes are also used in bioremediation, which is the cleanup of polluted sites using living organisms. Pseudomonas putida can degrade hydrocarbons, and fungi such as Aspergillus niger can remove heavy metals through biosorption. These processes help clean oil spills, industrial waste, and other toxic materials.

Microorganisms also support biofuel production. Yeasts ferment sugars into ethanol, which is used as a biofuel. Anaerobic bacteria produce methane as organic matter decomposes, and that methane can be collected as biogas. Together, these microbial processes support cleaner energy and more sustainable industry.
