Improper Integrals: Discontinuous Integrands

Improper integrals can appear when a definite integral has a discontinuity at one endpoint. The integrand may be undefined or become infinite there. In that case, the area under the curve is unbounded near the boundary. This behavior is often linked to a vertical asymptote at the edge of the interval.

To evaluate this kind of integral, the endpoint is replaced with a variable. The integral is then written over an interval where the function is defined. After that, a limit is taken as the variable moves toward the original endpoint. This limiting process shows whether a finite accumulated quantity still exists.

If the limit is finite, the improper integral converges. That means the total area under the curve stays bounded even though the function has singular behavior at the endpoint. A common example is a radial electric field that becomes infinite at the center. The field decreases with distance, but it still creates a discontinuity at the lower limit of integration.

To find the electric potential difference from near the center to a distance R, the lower limit is replaced by a small positive value. The integral is evaluated over that interval, and then the limit is taken as the lower bound approaches zero. This method accounts for the singular behavior at the origin. It can still produce a finite electric potential difference despite the discontinuity.
