La tuberculose ou tuberculose est une maladie infectieuse causée par Mycobacterium tuberculosis affectant principalement le parenchyme pulmonaire.
Il peut également affecter d’autres parties du corps, telles que les méninges, les reins, les os et les ganglions lymphatiques.
La maladie se propage par des gouttelettes en suspension dans l’air libérées lorsque les personnes infectées respirent, parlent, chantent, éternuent ou toussent.
Ces gouttelettes s’évaporent, laissant de minuscules noyaux, d’une taille allant de 1 à 5 m, en suspension dans l’air pendant des durées variant de quelques minutes à quelques heures. L’inhalation de ces noyaux propage l’infection à d’autres.
Plusieurs facteurs augmentent le risque de transmission de la tuberculose.
Le contact étroit avec une personne atteinte d’une tuberculose active augmente le risque d’inhalation de noyaux en suspension dans l’air, en fonction de la durée de l’exposition, de la proximité et des conditions de ventilation.
Les travailleurs de la santé qui effectuent des procédures à haut risque, telles que la bronchoscopie et l’aspiration, sont particulièrement vulnérables.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing acid-fast aerobic rod, causes tuberculosis. It spreads through respiratory droplets released when infected individuals breathe, talk, sing, sneeze, or cough. As droplets evaporate, tiny nuclei measuring 1-5 µm remain suspended in air for minutes to hours, transmitting infection when inhaled by others.
Q2: Why is tuberculosis not highly contagious despite airborne transmission?
TB transmission requires close, frequent, or prolonged exposure. Brief contact with few tubercle bacilli rarely causes infection. Transmission probability depends on microorganism concentration, exposure duration, ventilation conditions, and the individual's immune system. TB cannot spread through touch, food sharing, kissing, or physical contact.
