Question 1

What are pain receptors and where are they located in the body?

Accepted Answer

Pain receptors, called nociceptors, are sensory nerve endings distributed throughout the body including the skin, muscle sheaths, internal organs, and bone membranes. Although structurally similar, nociceptors vary in sensitivity; some respond to pressure, others to heat, and some to both. Many nociceptors are chemically sensitive, reacting to substances that induce pain.

Question 2

How does the gate control theory explain pain perception?

Accepted Answer

According to gate control theory, neural mechanisms in the spinal cord function as a gate that regulates the flow of sensory input to the central nervous system. This gate can block pain from conscious awareness under certain conditions, controlling whether pain signals reach the brain and are perceived as painful sensations.

Question 3

What are the two neural pathways that carry pain signals to the brain?

Accepted Answer

Pain travels via fast and slow pathways. The fast pathway connects directly to the thalamus and cerebral cortex, delivering sharp, localized pain in less than a second. The slow pathway routes through the limbic system, delaying arrival by several seconds and providing persistent pain that reminds the brain to restrict activity and monitor injury.

Question 4

Why do pain thresholds vary among different individuals?

Accepted Answer

Each pain-inducing stimulus has a threshold—the point at which it is perceived as painful—and this threshold differs among individuals. For example, a bee sting may cause intense pain in one person but only mild discomfort in another. Factors affecting perception influence how individuals experience and interpret painful stimuli.

Question 5

What is the difference between acute and chronic pain?

Accepted Answer

Acute pain is intense and temporary, such as during a surgical procedure or from a sharp injury. Chronic pain is long-lasting, persisting for extended periods or years, such as with ongoing conditions like arthritis. Both types serve different functions in alerting and protecting the body from harm.

Question 6

How can overstimulation of other senses produce pain?

Accepted Answer

Intense stimulation of any sense can cause pain. Bright light, loud sounds, or spicy food like habanero peppers can all produce painful sensations. When sensory input from touch, temperature, or other modalities becomes extreme, the sensation transitions from normal perception to pain, serving as a protective warning signal.

Question 7

What role do endorphins play in pain management?

Accepted Answer

Endorphins are neuropeptides that act as natural opiates, producing pleasure and pain relief. The brain generates the pain experience through chemical processes likely mediated by endorphins, which can turn pain signals on and off. This natural pain-relief system helps the body manage and reduce the perception of pain.
