Symbolic thinking is the ability to use symbols, words, and images to represent objects and concepts. Children in the preoperational stage, ages 2 to 7, use this skill to engage in pretend play, imagining their arms as airplane wings or a stick as a sword. This symbolic capacity allows them to blend reality with fantasy, creating imaginative scenarios that support cognitive development during this critical period.

Children in the preoperational stage cannot perform mental operations needed to understand conservation—the idea that an object's quantity remains unchanged despite appearance changes. For example, they believe one pizza slice cut in two pieces equals more than an uncut slice. This limitation stems from their reliance on visual cues and intuition rather than logical reasoning about quantity.

Egocentrism in the preoperational stage makes children unable to view situations from others' perspectives. They assume their personal preferences and viewpoints are universally shared. For instance, a child might offer their favorite toy to comfort a friend, believing the friend values it equally. This self-centered thinking gradually diminishes as children develop more complex reasoning abilities.

Preoperational children think based on personal experience rather than general knowledge and struggle with adult logic. They cannot mentally manipulate information or understand that changing an object's appearance doesn't alter its essential properties. Adults use abstract reasoning and logical operations, whereas preoperational children rely on intuition, visual perception, and concrete experiences to make sense of their world.

Pretend play enables children to use symbolic thinking by imagining objects as something different, like a broom as a horse or a hand as a phone. This imaginative activity allows children to practice representing ideas and objects mentally, strengthening their symbolic abilities. Make-believe play creates a foundation for more advanced cognitive skills while allowing children to explore and process their understanding of the world.

Preoperational children lack the mental operations required for conservation tasks, so they rely on visual cues to assess quantity. When comparing a tall, narrow glass to a short, wide glass with equal liquid, they believe the taller glass holds more because height is visually prominent. This perceptual focus over rational assessment reflects their developmental stage's cognitive limitations in abstract reasoning.

The preoperational stage spans approximately ages 2 to 7 years. During this period, children transition from sensorimotor thinking to symbolic thought, developing language and imagination. This stage marks a significant cognitive advancement as children begin representing objects and ideas through symbols, though they still lack the logical operations that emerge in later developmental stages.
