Abstract reasoning allows adolescents to think beyond immediate, tangible realities and consider hypothetical possibilities. In contrast, concrete operational thinking is grounded in real-world situations and observable objects. The formal operational stage enables adolescents to manipulate ideas mentally, test theories systematically, and understand complex relationships without requiring physical objects or direct experience.

Adolescent egocentrism is heightened self-consciousness where teenagers believe others are as focused on them as they are on themselves. The imaginary audience phenomenon leads adolescents to feel their actions, appearance, and behaviors are the center of attention. For example, a 15-year-old with a small pimple may assume everyone notices it intensely, projecting their self-focus onto others.
