Influences parentales sur la typification sexuelle

Parental influences play an important role in gender-typing.

Gender-typing is the process through which children learn appropriate gender roles shaped by their culture.

These gender roles are often subtly communicated through how parents interact with their children during early childhood.

For example, parents may encourage boys to play with trucks and girls with dolls.

At the same time, children closely observe their parents' actions, such as how household tasks are shared, the way they speak, and their hobbies or interests.

Parents generally display similar warmth, sensitivity, responsiveness, and control towards both their sons and daughters.

However, research suggests that there are gendered differences in parental treatment.

For instance, girls are often given more freedom to express negative emotions, whereas boys are often encouraged to control such emotions.

Studies also show that fathers often engage in rougher play with sons and show greater sensitivity toward daughters.

Similarly, mothers tend to be more sensitive and talk more with their daughters than with their sons.

Together, these everyday interactions help children learn which behaviors and roles their culture considers appropriate for their gender.
