Gland Dissection

Gland dissection is the careful separation and examination of glandular tissues to reveal their structure, organization, and connections within an organism. In biology, the procedure uses precise cutting and tissue handling to isolate a gland while preserving features such as secretory cells, ducts, blood vessels, and surrounding tissues; microscopy may then provide finer detail. Comparing dissected glands helps students and researchers distinguish endocrine glands, which release hormones into the bloodstream, from exocrine glands, which secrete substances through ducts. The resulting anatomical evidence supports studies of physiology, development, disease-related changes, and the relationship between gland structure and function.

The adult mosquito salivary gland (SG) is required for the transmission of all mosquito-borne pathogens to their human hosts, including viruses and parasites. This video demonstrates efficient isolation of the SGs from the larval (L4) stage Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes and preparation of the L4 SGs for further analysis.
